How much does our past inform our present?

Answers:
very much. It shapes our attitudes, perceptions and sometimes biases. The saying "History repeats itself" is very true. We just have to be conscious enough to realize that and not make the same mistakes as the past generations.
ex: the current debate over putting a fence along the mexican border is not all that different from the Berlin Wall. Context may have changed, but the underlying theme is very similar.
we may look back at stuff once in awhile
but the only think we learn is what kinda of stuff we had
Not as much as it should.
Man's pigheadedness and natural disinclination to be 'told what to do' or learn from his errors largely predisposes the Race to eternal repetition of futile, wasteful and sometimes evil mistakes.

I believe that our past effect's everything that makes us what we are today present.
Insecurities, Addictions , Abuse , Mental health problems to name a few.
This is on a general level.
Spiritual level. it is believed that everyone needs to face and resolve these issues as they effect the present you.
From all levels from past life's, as what has happened to our soul is it carries the hurt and effects our emotions and behaviour to present life ..
If you are a Jungian or a Freudian, you would be forced to say that one's past very much informs, or at least influences, our present. It is called "Conditioning". Also it can include traumas. This can be overcome if one is aware. One can undo conditioning, just as one can get over traumas, but acknowledging them and not repressing or denying them.
Why not read some volumes of Freud's work and also Jung's, and see which of these two great men's writing you lean toward?
You can not see where you are going to if you are looking all the time at past, nor can you see where you have come from if you never look back.
Look at what you are doing now, occasionally look at the past and ponder what lies ahead, but don't forget to live.
Far too much. So much of political and social conflict is caused by people returning past grudges rather than co-operating, by relying on historical precedence over ethical debate, by focusing on preventing the old mistakes rather than acknowledging the current ones and by the ghastly spectre of ancient, unverifiable religion being used in the name of temperance to control and manipulate we who can be so easily made to fear the unknowable.
Hopefully, the people who read this Time Capsule will know that the past is just that; old news. Perhaps they may even be lucky enough to live for the present over digging up dead horses.
