Are there any studies which show the positive/negative effects of National Service on a nation?
For instance, do any countries that have national service have lower crime rates etc?

Take a look at this I think it's what you need. It's not just the effect on the crime rate you need to focus on you need to look at the effect on the armed forces. We have had many tries at this in one way or another the end result is that you can't force someone to do something.
I think it's Belgium or Switzerland that has no proper army, so everyone is sort of in the TA. Don't know if that helps or not though.
not sure about "fixed" studies.. but national service does and will ruin what is left of our armed forces, this is hard to explain hear, but we have a professional army, and its very noticeable when you work with a "conscript" army. and believe me, we don't want to become a conscript army.. we in this country (England) are going down hill as it is (*** licking to the Americans) the last thing we need is an even more unprofessional Armed forces
ask the men that served two years in the service and their answers will always be "it made me grow up" and with that in mind if this country had never abandoned it the crime rate would be almost non existent
