The answers have been great so far, so can i ask, what would you ideally use psychoanalysis for?
Like personality disorders? Not serious ones but post trauma and OCD etc? What is this theory good for in terms of therapy issues?
Answers:
Psychoanalysis explores unconscious process and why we do some of the things that we do. It is usually not as "pure" as Freud would have had it, it has changed considerable, I believe, over the last 80plus years. It does explore personality disorders and some other Axis I issues as well. It really explores what is called intrapsychic development, how we became who we are, this occurs by way of internalizing the ideals, thoughts, views, etc of a parent or parental figure. If we grow up in an invalidating, chaotic, destructive environment, why would we be positive, decent people? Most of us would not, I would argue. This is where psychoanalysis would come in, helping those individuals who were not given the tools to acclimate/assimilate into our society well and helping them to do this. Yeah, some people consider it psychobabble, but I use some form of it and have had some wonderful success stories, if people are willing to do the work, which is usually not easy, no one wants to look at the painful aspects of their lives, but it can be curative if approached properly in a safe environment.
It's very good fro the psychoanalyst as it allows them to charge lots of money for there opinion, one that most people would give down the pub.
its so they can work out who has to go to the nuthouse and who is safe
I have been in a psychoanalytical therapy group for about 12-years now. I have been working on issues to do with a traumatic childhood and the bull-shyte life I led because of it until I broke down. Psychoanalysis is helping me figure out the drives behind my behaviour and how it can sometimes be inappropriate. It's working and I wish I could tell you exactly how, then I'd probably be able to make better use of it.
to resolve all the childhood trauma that contributes to your living an unconscious life, increase self awareness, increase self acceptance, and the ability to make conscious choices based on what is happening in the here and now instead of the past.
