What is it about old people and rubbish bins?

My neighbour is in his 80's and every 'bin day' he has to put the bin out for collection (something unnecessary, as the bin men do it) and no sooner has the truck driven away, he gets straight back outside and puts them back in place. I could set my watch by him!

Answers:
Why are you spending your time watching him?
aww, bless him.
because they dont have as much to worry about anymore and so they start to worry about all the little things.
He probably feels and hopes that this very small gesture is helping him do his bit. Good on him. If we all went the extra mile to help others it would be a better world in which we live.
Obviously he is very bored and it gives him pleasure to do something, the trouble with men when they retire they have no hobbies and they get lonely. Men never seem to prepare for leisure whereas women love it.
i always put my bin out for the binmen, i don't have to but i do to save them alittle time they work really hard, so a little help wouldn't hurt. and i also fetch it back in asap so its not taking room up on the pavement, can't see what the problem is lol
He has nothing else to do! And, by the sound of it, neither do you!
I guess the both of you have too much time on your hands! The one time I got really annoyed was when we were left a note by our bin man as we hadn't put our bin out saying we've done it for you this time, but do it yourself next time, it wasn't very polite. The reason we hadn't done it was cos we were on holiday!
Because it gives him something to do, Better then sitting and watching the neighbours out of the window.
Are you a nosey neighbour?
While I'm putting my bin out I always have a look round the street for any litter that's been dropped, pick it up, and put it in the bin. If all my neighbours did the same this would be a much cleaner place to live. Go on, just two bits of litter each, every day.?
Actually, the binmen are not paid to collect a bin from someones house, or put it back. You should not be watching your neighbour, as if he catches you he could have you for stalking him. I think it is great that he is able to do something like that when you just sit and can't be bothered. Good for him. Bad for your image. Help him next time.
Have you thought he just might be tidy and considerate, doesn't want blind ppl walking in to them.
Or perhaps he doesn't want them pinched or set on fire.
if we don't put our bins out they don't get emptied.
maybe you should stop being so spoilt and put it out yourself once in a while.
I had my bin stolen, so I do the same thing. The council told me it was my responsibility because I should take it in straight away.
It gives old people something to do. Just because they're old, doesn't mean they don't need occupation.
Perhaps the young (I assume you are) have gone so far down the 'self self self' path that seems to be the norm that they get confused when an action performed by another person, that is even just a small contribution to a societal infrastructure, puts the youngster into a state of utter confusion ..... ( "why is that bloke doing that ?, he shouldnt be doing that because its HELPING MY SOCIETY AND NOT BEING SELFISH ")
You'll be old one day and some youngster will say 'That old girl, next door, does some really strange and quirky things!'
It very obviously gives him something to do by walking outside to do it. Maybe, he's fed up and bored to have no one to talk to, maybe, he hopes he can catch someone to talk to or he could just be happy that he has some work to do.
.Your funny! Who's the fanatic here, the old boy for trying to be neat and tidy or you for watching the poor old boy. Leave him alone and get on with dressing hairs and not peeking out behind the blinds,

Think yourself lucky dear that you have a neighbour that cares and not one who prefers to live in disarray.

Anyway it keeps the old boy occupied and busy.He is also a creature of habit.

And I am wondering do his actions give you a guilt complex.yes I wonder?.
older people prolly have nothing better to do since they're retired and all. but something else i know abt old people and rubbish bins, they hate throwing stuff away.
So you have an eighty year old neighbor that has a thing about his trash bins.and that has prompted you to condemn seniors.

What makes you so perfect?
What you need is to have more respect for the elderly. He is minding his own business and you go around criticizing and judging him.even making a big thing of it in this forum. Do you think that make you look smart?
Get a life!
Maybe u should learn the good he's doing & try doing the same. Little gestures like this will be appreciated by the Bin men.
Perhaps the important question is...If sometime, one "bin day", he doesn't do what you expect, would you give him a knock? to see if he is ok?....or just continue with your...hairspray? :-)
It is just something for him to while away the time
everyone on our street puts their bin out. he is probably a bit tired of being inside so much ,and it gives him something to do. maybe he will appreciate a wave from you next time you are granpa spying.
i bet he has one of those flower sticker wheelie bin covers too! and gets his bin cleaned weekly! i bet it smells of roses in there
they don't want to be burden to anyone.
Maybe that is what was expected years ago and he can't get out of the habit. When he gets one of those new fangled micro chips on his dustbin, it will say, in a Dahlek type voice, "take me out or I'll exterminate". After his kind deed, which won't be noted or appreciated, he will be fined for not sorting his re-recyclables
