Answers:
Like someone else said, aerobic conditioning is critical to any combat sport like muay thai or boxing. You could jump rope, jog, swim, etc to build up your aerobic conditioning. Also, you could do things like push ups and light weightlifting to build up you upper body strength. You could do weight exercises to build up your leg strength also. I've heard that muay thai fighters also do a great deal of abdominal training so you could start doing lots of crunches and other ab workouts for your stomach. Core strength is important for alot of reasons, but if you plan to eventually spar it will be even more important. Getting hit in the gut hurts (regardless of the sport) and having a strong midsection will help with being able to handle punches, kicks, knees, and the like.

Good Luck!
I would suggest a trip to Thailand, that way you can engage in the culture & prepation that you'll require.
Watch Ong Bak, that should get you ready! :-P
I would start skipping as it will keep you on your toes and help strengthen your calf muscles and perhaps jogging, these are simple things a boxer would do to maintain fitness levels and something I would do to get the mindset right before starting as I`m sure once you start, everything will fall into place.
Aerobic Fitness is really important. The Strength and anaerobic muscle fitness will be taken care of once you start training. Try to avoid doing too much in the weights room as this will be detrimental to your mobility. Meditation can really help, learning to focus your mind properly really helps in any form of Martial arts. It also helps with getting hit in the head and staying alert, which is a big thing especially in Muay Thai. One of the guys here mentioned Ong Bak. The guy who plays the main character doesn't do any weights at all in his training, you should watch it so you can see whats possible.
i done mauy thai for 2 years ive had 4 fights the main thing is to get 2 your club dont think about how fit you are thats your instructors job they expect you to be useless ive met many people whove come from other martial arts back grounds when they start mauy thai they find it just as dificult as someone with no expriance in other arts the only way to prepare 4 mauy thai is practice mauy thai moves were better to go than your local gym.
As someone else said, just go to a class. if you work yourself up too much you'll end up going in with the attitude that you're better than other learners and thats bad. Just go along, watch a few classes first maybe, and join up. I started training with no experience at all, wasnt fit and never done a days exercise in years. Now i can outrun anyone in the class after a few months!
learning Muay thai the first thing to prepare yourself is not the physiical aspect as those others had suggested it the mental parts of it. Muay thai is a tough game not for the faint hearted person,. It all pain and contact if you are real on a good school for studying muay thai.Disciplin for the people around you then you can then think about the physical training of it .that all i can tell you. I am fought over 30 fighter no lost in muay thai in HONG KONG.
