Ironman triathlon next year?

A friend's up for doing the Ironman UK next August and is trying to persuade me to do it with him.

I've been doing sprint and 3/4 distance events all summer so I'm fairly fit, but would it be too much to go to Ironman in a year?
I don't want to be stupid about it or end up with injuries that I'll have for the rest of my life.

I have seen an 8-month training plan on the web that looks quite good, starting in January. But what should I do over the next 3-4 months to prepare myself for all that training and minimise the risk of injury?

Any comments welcome, apart from perhaps 'what the hell are you thinking you crazy idiot'.

Thanks in advance xx

Answers:
8 months sounds like a good preparation period for someone who's already pretty fit.

In advance of that you might spend time on your bike. Bike handling and peddling efficiency improve with experience and the more time in the saddle the better. Also, there have been several deaths of triathletes on the roads this year and I wonder if this is a result of people getting out on the roads to do intensive training without quite enough experience.

On injuries - the ITB that runs down the outside of your leg is very fashionable to damage at the moment. Foam rolling and massage are things to think about for your long training period. Getting miles into your legs before the intensive training would help.

Core conditioning is recommended and doing a pilates class with a good instructor is a good long term idea before or in conjunction with your main training.
I know you can do it!
Its all in the "mental" preparation! I'm an athlete too and I am getting ready for a competition a race and just say I'm going to do this and when you are training visualize!! It really helps me through all competitions all the best to you! please post when you did it..I'll be watching from Canada!
work on technique. your transitions, swimming form, biking form running form. that way when you start to prepare for the intensity of the ironman you will be doing it with excellent form and when you get to the point where you begin to hone your form you will end up with awesome form and this will help prevent injuries. do some yoga/meditations to prepare for the 6 month training and it helps get your mind in the right place. GOOD LUCK AND KICK A&$
I am sure you can do it.
