What's the best heart rate monitor to buy in terms of value for money?

Polar seem to be the standard. Most machines in gyms Ive been in pickup and display polar transmitters. I have had a number of polar monitors all, except the first, with a PC link to use the Polar Performance software. I've looked on eBay and you can pick the older high end models for a snip, as the early adopters buy the new models.
You can get polar models that are "coded" to cut out crosstalk.
Polar ones are pretty good and they do a range of them, depends what you want it to do and how much you're willing to pay but I'd definitely look at their website.
ye i would have to agree with bambi,polar are probally the best but if u have a training group den sometimes they will pick up a signal from someone esle's H.R.M. and display it on your watch, also it depends wat ur looking for in it,just to monitior ur H.R. or do u want it to do interval running and speed sessions aslo, or just to show calories burned,you will find all you need at
