My mother has an under active thyroid also & she says that it is very hard to lose weight. You will have to eat like a diabetic (like someone else mentioned), drink lots of water, & exercise everyday (maybe like 1 hour a day).
The obvious question would then be "what are you eating?"

I too have an underactive thyroid and in order for me to lose weight I have to consume a diabetic diet and exercise TWICE a day.

Look into it.. it does work.
Try this diet.

Try taking vitamins with minerals in them..especially Iodine.
ARE YOU GETTING MEDS FOR THE HYPO-THYROID ? YOUR DOCTOR CAN PRESCRIBE MEDICATIONS LIKE SYNTHROID TO HELD ELEVATE YOUR THYROID OUTPUT. THIS CAN HELP YOU GET BACK ON TRACK TO THE DESIRED WEIGHT. MY FAMILY HAS A HISTORY OF HYPO-THYROID MY UNCLES TWO SISTERS AND MYSELF. MEDICATION HAS HELPED. IF YOU DON'T GET HELP, IT CAN LEAD TO OTHER ILLNESSES. SEE YOUR DOCTOR SOON.
you have to drink alot of water. not alot of juice. juice has alot of sugar. eat fruits and veggies. try to eat something green; vegetable, everyday. green foods have alot of fiber.

you may also look at the time of day you eat; eating before bed is not good whether you exercise or not, & how often you eat.
you also loose some weight by eating something for breakfast everyday.

anytime you want to lose weight you should always talk to your doctor.
If you think that your thyroid is a serious problem, I would have it checked out by a physician. As the other guys said there can be some other health problems associated with it.
If it's not enough to require meds you may just be in for the same fight all of us have only a little harder. It's never easy to lose weight. Maybe a trainer or a dietitian might help with your goal.
I also have a thyroid problem and have had success with the Zone Diet ( http://www.zonediet.com/public/. ). It actually is a long term way of eating healthier vice a diet.

Cardio exercise of 40-60 minutes a day is also very important.

Also ensure that you are waiting 1 hour after taking your medicine before eating and do not eat calcium rich foods for 4-8 hours as calcium can interfere with the synthroid. Avoid soy products, which are common in diet/protein drinks and nutrition bars, because it can decrease thyroid function in people with thyroid problems.

There is a book called "The Thyroid Diet" by Mary Shomon that also gives alot of advise based on research and personal experience.

Ensure if you do change your diet or try supplements, you talk to your doctor and get your blood levels checked after about 6 weeks, because the diet and/or supplements may impact your thyroid levels which would defeat the purpose of the changes.

Most of all be patient because it is a very slow process for hypo-thyroid people.
Go see a doctor.
