Cricket is not a sport, why do people regard it as one?

Only one team member is active at any one time, the team is selected by 'selectors' and not a manager, inactive players run their businesses on their mobiles when not batting, if a batsman is injured someone else runs for him, very few people attend the match - the vast majority watch on TV, the national team don't play in tournaments but 'Tests', there are many variations to the rules to make it watchable. It's a joke.

Answers:
I hate cricket. What i don't get is if it rains they stop the game n call it a draw? No-one ever wins
it is a sport dumbo
Kinda how baseball is a joke because managers choose lineups right?
but then golf and darts are also considered as sports! its all a joke!
Well dear, if you don't like our national game, why don't you f**k off somewhere else - HOWZAT!
look on the web it is considered a sport and seems to be kind of a big one
alot of things are considered sports but aren't. like golf and bowling. I know it's big in India.I guess if there's a mass audience for it they can call it whatever they want.
Inactive player run their businesses?? who told you that?
Very few ppl attend the match? in my country it's a religion , ppl start lining up for the tickets days before it is scheduled
National team doesn't play in tournaments?? then what would you call World Cup, and ICC champions trophy

When did you wake up from your grave grand dad?
cos it is..so there.so when was the last time england football won anything?
Too true. Not like the fiercely competitive"sports" such as synchronised swimming, ice dancing and rhythmic gymnastics.
Me, I'd much sooner face a 95 mph bouncer from Darren Gough than face Kim Yuk Yoo waving her ribbon at me in a wonderfully artistic way.
it is a sport. leave it at that.
It is called a sport to allow those who enjoy it, in general men, to sound as if they are the 'sporty' type, when actually, if 'playing' they spend most of the time watching/relaxing or if they are 'watching' it takes a whole day out of normal life, rather than the 2 hours for other sports.
Does that answer your question?
I don't like cricket but it's more of a sport than fishing or poker.
What is cricket, if not a sport? Because you do not understand the athletic talents required and the mechanics & strategies of the game, does not make it any less do.
I suppose one can dissect any sport according to its idiosyncrasies and arrive at the same conclusion.
it is not sports ,it can be called a beach where players enjoy hot weather
if you ain't interested in cricket then don't ask about it

your opinion is your opinion mate i bet you have never played the sport and if you did know anything about the sport you would know it is a game of strategies out thinking the other player your a small minded person that obviously has knowledge what so ever i hope you know there are other subjects beside cricket on here your small minded opions are prolly needed somewhere else not here.....

GET A LIFE LOSER
may i know.on which sport on ther planet earth do the managers select the playiers??? i have heard about coaches.but not managers selecting the team..!! get it rite pal!!
cricket is stil the most watched gme in the world.soo plz
Of course its a sport. Just becuase you do not understand the rules it does not mean its a joke. I do not know about American football or baseball and I don't think its a joke.

One player is not involved at a time - there are 13 actually - the 2 batsmen and the fielding side. The side not batting are also involved indirectly as they have to think strategy and who to put in next to bat in certain situations.

The captain and some other senior members can help pick the team. Lots of people do attend - the upcoming Ashes series in OZ is sold out and the ICC champions trophy will also be well attended I am sure.

Do not be so judgemental and if you do keep those thoughts to yourself!
this is a NEWS for me....thanx for informing ....now i wont watch it as its not a sports..

Ahh who cares abt its rules n regulations...players r selceted by manager or selectors, n rest bla bla.who is intersted in that mate. its a lovly game n we enjoy it ...simple !..even if it is a joke....I love this joke ;)
I think you have had enough of it. You better learn alphabets of cricket before asking such a question or don't pose your nose in this category.
Well you are obviously either trying to provoke an aggressive response or you are just an ignorant fool.
Every single player on the field is constantly active, even the fielders are moving all the time. In fact some fielding positions can be very physically demanding. Batting is demanding physically and mentally, and bowling places incredible strains on your whole body. Try bowling 10 overs in a row (60 balls) off a long run up, and tell me then if you think it is not challanging. Also try facing a bowler who can reach 150km+ and bowls accurate bouncers at your head, and tell me it is not challanging.
Most teams have selectors, AND a manager or coach. (They have very different jobs to do).
Who cares what batsment do when they are not batting, they may be on mobiles, or playing cards, or reading.but who cares, the game is on the ground, not the changing rooms!
Actually TEST match attendances are at their highest since the 1950's - the whole ASHES last year sold out, and the upcoming Ashes in Australia is expected to do so as well. And yes, over 2 BILLION people do watch it on TV, making it the second most popular sport on the planet, by a long way.
National teams DO play regularly in tournaments, ie like the one that the top 10 national teams are playing CURRENTLY! The ICC Champions trophy (TOURNAMENT!) is being played in India, in fact the next game is due to start any minute. The World Cup (TOURNAMENT) is on next march. Yes, they also play Test matches, because they are a very popular form of the game. As for variations, there are none, except for bowling and field restrictions in ODI games, to make it higher scoring and more exciting.
You may very well find cricket a joke, but over 2 billion people in 120 countries(1/4 of all the people on Earth are incredibly passionate about it, and take it very seriously. You should probably avoid trying to insult other people's passions just to evoke a response.
BTW Do you actually know anything about cricket? It doesn't seem so.
NB Oxford dictionary defines "sport" as: "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature". Cricket has running, catching, bowling, fielding, throwing, hitting. It requires hand eye co-ordination, strength, power, aerobic and anaerobic fitness. What part of this DOESN'T fit the definition?!?
If u say that sun is not a star---no-one is goin to believe.
Check ur brain - consult a nuro-specialist.
what r u doing here . just go now.
its a sport
Cricket is a sport, and most people do regard it as one. The views of a few oddbods like yourself can't mask the fact.
you got to stop being so negative! cricket is so relaxing and millions of people watch it live on sky..ie, me!
if talking bollocks was a sport you would be world champion! i sense an inactive brain!
Cricket is a sport
Sports are athletic games or tests of skill undertaken primarily for the diversion of those who take part or those who observe them. The range is great; usually, however, the term is restricted to any play, pastime, exercise, game, or contest performed under given rules, indoors or outdoors, on an individual or a team basis, with or without competition, but requiring skill and some form of physical exertion.

According to dictionary Sport is a Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

So, Cricket is definitely a modern sport, a team sport.

Well for your information there are a lot of tournaments including world cup held every 4 years, ICC Champions Trophy held every 2 years and many other smaller tournaments.

Selectors are similar to managers. They consult the coach and the captain before selecting the team.

Even in football if a player is injured you make a substitution, but in cricket there cannot be a substitution while batting, so they use a runner.

Even in other sports , if the teams are not good the number of people watching the game will be minimal . But when there are interesting matches people do come in large numbers to the stadiums and those who cannot come watch on TV.

So cricket is for sure not a JOKE. It is a religion for many.
Cricket is videly loved because of its unpredictable nature.. any thing can happen at any time. It is so true in the case of one dayers. Some matchesprovides thrill till the end of the match.

But, in recent days, the players are playing for themselves, not for the team. Cricket means money now a days. If one hits one or two centuries, he will be a hero and the companies will que up to him to get him for advertisement. Only, a few of these players have the dedication as of the previous generation players.

You know, now, the populairty this game has, especially in the Indian sub continent. The 7 thumbs down, you got, shows it.
Sage? Change your name to Onion, you need stuffing. Cricket is the greatest sport of the lot - although it can be deeply philosophical, it can also be appreciated even by idiots, so what are you, a sub-idiot?
