Should footballer's salaries be capped and if so how much should they earn in a week?
i am a massive football fan, but i must admit that today's players who are playing in the top leagues, particuarly in spain and italy are overpaid. i mean, they kick a ball around, its not as if its strenuous work is it in comparison to other non-sporting related jobs? therefore, i ask how much do you think the likes of beckham and rooney should get in wages per week? personally, i think football players should get no more than a £1,000, perhaps less for doing a week's work and they should be paid weekly and not yearly. what do you lot think?

The question is - what do they do with it all?!?! They have so much money, they don't know what to do with it! Except buy castles and ridicuolously large amounts of money on absolute C R A P!!
There's millions of people around the world living in poverty and barely have enough to eat, and yet these supposed 'Gods' of Sport , like Beckham (World's Biggest Tart) earn millions of pounds for doing F U C K ALL!!
Think about the little kids in the sweatshops in India and Africa and the little kids who work 18 hour days for 10p a week. And tarts like Beckham do what.? Kick a ball around 3 times a week for a few million quid!
THE WHOLE THING IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!
in the US (from the looks of your question you are probably from the UK) all our pro athletes are overpaid. i also love sports, but i think we place way too much emphasis on the importance of sports icons. there should definitely be a cap on salaries
They already are capped
i think its a bit late to reduce them to £1k, i don't think most of these top players would stand for it, but i do think they should be capped because they are getting rediculous, and all high wages do is push ticket prices up. Maybe about £50Kwould be a realistic figure
Put them on a nurses salary
and put the nurses on a footballers wage - much more fair!
Yes they should be. There is no way in hell that they earn the amount they get paid, after all it's not skilled work. They should swap salaries with Doctors and Nurses, at least they will earn the money.
Would you want your salary capped? No, right? Unless FIFA can come up with a revenue sharing system like the NFL and one that bridges national divides, no way. There used to be the "maximum wage" in English football and Jimmy Hill et all fought hard to get rid of that as footballers were exploited to no ends. Sure the balance has tipped in the players' favor but I prefer that to the former system.
I would agree soccer players are overpoaid as they provide precious little entertainment in 2006 compared to, say, the '80s. But Econ 101 will teach you they sure generate a tremendous amount of revenue and, well, they get paid what the market can bear.
Comparing sports-related jobs to, say, any other outside the entertainment field is apples and oranges.
They should get payed in a week as much as they can count to without using their finger and toes.
Boy would we have some poor footballers!
Lmao
Like most jobs they are performance related, they have this incredible talent and generate money for the club like a club asset and inspire and entertain millions, but just remember that as high earners they are gonna pay 40% tax on those huge salaries so let's wonder what the government are doing with all this money?
Yes because the high salaries some of these D8ck heads are paid is killing the game of football. Due to these high salaries some of the players don't seem to have the same hunger for the game anymore.
actually running miles and miles and getting kicked and pushed in front of thousands of fans screaming at you, and having many thousands more debating your performance publicly isn't exactly a piece of cake. no they shouldn't be capped, by all means cap payrolls, but not individual salaries, if they can make that much $, why shouldn't they? a 1,000 pound cap is stupid, that really isn't that much, and playing football is a lot harder than a lot of jobs that pay more than that. and it's not like tickets are gonna be any cheaper, and i'm no happier about owners getting all the extra money that the players wouldn't get. why do you want players to get paid so little? the quality of play would suffer, because a lot of players play not only because they like to, but because they can make a lot of money doing something they like, a lot of them wouldn't be pros if they could make 1,000 pounds per week playing football, and 2,000 or 3,000 pounds doing something else
well if people are stupid enough to pay out £50 for a shirt and whatever ridiculous ammount for a season ticket then the money has to go somewhere, the only other place would be to shareholders i suppose and what do they do?
but yes for what they do they should not be paid over £2000 a week at most, all they do is kick a ball around a field.. people who risk their lives at work get paid less than this.
Much akin to the gladiatorial arenas of Roman times (not chelsea's roman) today's sport is a soothing balm to the masses that governments are keen to have. Capping is fine but any cataclysmic change on that scale ( at least in star player's eyes) would have to be done with the grace and thought that Sir Elton John shows when choosing a lipstick. Very carefully.

p.s. wages are no different in spain, italy AND england
oh, and you can't MAKE them play for pride and passion and not for money...i hate it when people go all moralistic like that
why should your wage be capped if i were a footballer i d go crazy if my wage was capped good luck to them
I totally and completely agree. But it's never gonna happen.
It's the same thing over here, but with hockey (though I prefer soccer/footballl but.).
A few years ago we had a major problem, the players, who were already being paid 10 times what my mother is paid a year (1 million$ Which is equivalent to about 2 million euros. Or maybe 50 thousand. I'm not to sure), actually wanted a raise because they have been payed 1 million for about 10 years now. They fought their case for about 1 year with the NFL administrators and coaches. The whole hockey season was cut for one year and fans were depressed. I don't know what happened finally because I couldn't care less about hockey but the point is, athletes are payed way to much. And the million dollars is only for normal players not big ones that would be equivalent to football's Zidane.
THEN AGAIN, athletes have to retire earlier because of their age. It's hard for them to find another job.
I don't know!
It can't be right that a footballer in the top flight be picking up a 1000pound paycheck. Imagine what those in the lower divisions and minor leagues will be getting if such a system kicks into gear.
I think the previous limit at 50,000 is quite reasonable considering the income that the clubs generate.
No.
If the morons who run football are willing to pay the salaries then so be it. If you where offered £200,000 a week would you knock it back? It is wrong to blame agents and players, blame the halfwits who are running/ruining our game. Personally I think that the money that is paid to players is way over the top but no one has the right to impose a limit on a person's earning potential that would be wrong. I think it is better to lay the blame were it belongs and that is with the tools who are paying the wages.
