What's the best way to prevent 'stiches' while running?
When running I seem to get quite bad stitches, and need to know how to stop/prevent them.
Answers:
Side stitches are caused by a muscle spasm in the diaphragm. They are more common in novice runners and you should get relief as you gain more experience. The key is to run often, not sporadically, b/c this allows you to develop a better running breathe. This article http://www.bodyresults.com/e2sidestitche.
has really good advice that should help you.
Practice makes perfect ;)
1. Don't run
2. jog
3. slowly increase speed when running then slowing down and keep doing it like waves,
try walking
Fit a zip
Don't run!
breath in through your mouth and out through your nose slowly increase your speed and keep breathing in through your mouth out through your nose
try not to think of a stitch either concentrate on your destination
You must be taking on either to much water before you run or not enough. I ran 4 plus mile this morning without one. It's a matter of trail and error really. You will get there eventually.
Drink a lot more.
side stitches are caused by poor breathing.
you want to take long, slow breaths, not short quick ones. sometimes it helps to count paces while you breathe, like in for 4 steps, then out for 4. Some people find that singing to yourself can help, because it takes your mind off of the breathing but forces you to take deeper breaths and exhale longer.
