How many people have died on Aconcagua?
Answers:
Nah, is does not kill 20% of people who attempt to climb it. It's high (7000m), but the standard route up it requires no technical mountaineering experience as such (I climbed it earlier this year). It is however an exercise in acclimatisation and AMS is common.
There are more serious routes on the South Face (the most severe side in that hemisphere) where fatalities are more common, but due to the footfall the normal route receives (3500 ascents per annum) these do not make up 20% to my knowledge.
what is it, where is it, who's there ?
A lot Probably about 20% of the people that have climbed it. I read a book about it once but I cant remeber the name It might have been a short story in "the Arm Chair Mountaineer"
