This probably doesn't belong in a boxing catagory, but as a fan of MMA I'll take a stab at it. Honestly, even if you're talking all of the fighters from the short history of the sport at their prime I'd still give the edge to today's best fighters. The sport has advanced and continues to advance by leaps and bounds, and the training the current MMA fighters go through is much tougher IMO. Furthermore, the sport has become so much more technically complex--remember that in the first UFC there wasn't really any "hybrid" fighters: Royce Gracie won easily because he was the only one there with significant ground fighting and submission knowledge. Now all of the top guys train in other disciplines--Wanderlei Silva, for example, is arguably "pound for pound" the most dangerous striker in MMA, but he's also got a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. That sort of well rounded training was unheard of even a few years ago.
With that significant disclaimer, I'd have to go with the guy I consider to be the toughest dude walking the planet right now: PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelieneko
I'd choose Rickson Gracie.
Definately Fedor.but after watching Cro Cops performance in the grand prix, i think he could give Fedor a run for his money...even though Fedor has already beaten cro cop, cro cop has improved..and he already avenged a loss to Wandy
