Damon Hill won the the F1 WDC in 1996 in front of teammate Jacques Villeneuve after winning the Japanese GP, where Villeneuve retired early in the race.
Schumacher was out of the running for the WDC from mid-season.

Damon Hill, known as Stig in Britian, he's the driver behind the helmet driving a car in the opening sequence to a BBC Programme called "Top Gear" which do a series of tests on practically every car to see how they perform. He's very hard to spot because you see so little of his face in the sequence. I think he took up residence in Cork, Southern Ireland some years back.
