First of all you should go to the RAC Motorsport site where there are several information packs available on all sorts of motorsport. Read them before taking too many decisions as they may well help you in mapping out your career path in jarts.
Go to your nearest track, rent a kart and start driving. If you like it, then you could probably buy an entry level kart for around $1500 or $2000 and join a karting club.
The karts will get progressively more expensive, especially shifter karts, if you get into serious racing.
A kart track would have information on clubs.
