Why does israel and its club sides play in european comps in football?

They've been part of European football for years.
As far as I am concerned, a country is European if it is part of UEFA.
I am Jewish and live within walking distance of Wembley Stadium, and my dad and I hope to attend England v Israel there on 8th September 2007, although no-one knows whether the Stadium will be completed by that date.
Because they also compete in the Eurovision Song Contest - the real giode to who's European and who isn;t, surely..

...I think you will find Russia are also in the Euro competitions too. I think it is because they are close to Europe if in fact not actually in it.

Because it would not be safe for either the Israeli National team or any Israeli club team to travel to play games in other countries in the Middle-East. Imagine what would happen if Israel were drawn in the same World Cup qualifying group as Lebanon or Iraq or Iran. If you were an Israeli player or official or fan would you want to make that trip? I can't for the life of me think why Israel are in the Eurovision Song Contest though.
Because they would have to play teams from Arab countries in the Middle East, most of whom don't even recognize Israel as a country. Can you imagine an Israeli team going to Iran to play a soccer match? They probably would not make it out alive (not that they would accept to go there). So security for the Israelis is the reason why for soccer purposes (and not only) they compete in Europe.

Because of security reasons, of course, they can't possibly play against Arab nations after decades of destruction in Middle East. But there is another question: how did Israel have 5 (yes, five) clubs in qualifications for UEFA Champions League, UEFA League and Intertoto Cup? I mean, they are not THAT good. Their league is good for nothing and they never did anything special in European competition. So - why five places?

'Cos no Arab country wants to have something to do with them.So we have accepted Israel in every European competition.
I wouldn't imagine the Israeli soccer team playing in Iran.
