Overall I'd have to say the best ski resort in France is Courchevel 1850 - that's why it's so damn expensive.
Footnote: I've seen mention of the PdS below my answer. It isn't a resort. It's a liberally disjointed and low ski area which does indeed lay claim (just!) to having the highest total mileage. Avoriaz (which has been heavily marketed to boarders) is the only decent resort in the whole place, unless you are just going for a midseason weekend, 'cos the PdS while low, is very near Geneva.
