First, make sure that BMX is what you want. Many people confuse BMX, Freestyle, and Jumping bikes.

BMX is for racing, usually on a dirt course. They are very light and very fast, but you can't put pegs or other stunt accessories on them. Better quality BMX have only a front brake and have very light frames and wheels. If you plan on just riding around everywhere this is probably your best option. Expect to pay somewhere between $250 and $700.

Freestyle bikes are meant for use on paved surfaces. They are usually pretty heavy and very well balanced. Equipped with pegs and other accessories, they are for stunts. Never take a freestyle bike on the dirt. A freestyle bike should set you back between $250 and $1000.

Jumping bikes are like a cross between freestyle and BMX. They are very heavy, take a lot of abuse, and have a lot of features similar to a freestyle. They usually (but not always) have a front brake. Use this in the dirt and mud and still have the ability to perform stunts. Because of their weight they aren't very good for just riding around. You can pick one of these up for between $250 and $600.

It is important to know that if you go to Wal Mart or Target or someplace like that you will only get bikes that LOOK like these, not REAL equipment. There are no bargains in the bicycle industry.

As far as brands, I would look at Diamondback, DBR (Diamondback Racing), or Specialized.
Haro
i will have to agrea with mirage cause i like freestyle and mtb obstickle jump so make a dision on witch if its racing then redline if its freestyle then haro if its flatland then i dont know

Good luck also don't get a mongoose I had one and it fell apart on me wher I was riding and bad parts.
I'm just going to give you a basic guide to what you should be looking for. Do some proper research yourself, and I hope this helps you.

First off, wait until after Christmas to buy. All the bike shops will drop their prices.

Decide what discipline you want to get into. I'm guessing it is probably street or park, maybe dirt, and unlikely to be flatland right?

You want a 100% chromoly frame. Don't even look at the cheaper frames with full hi-ten or part hi-ten, part chromoly frames. They will ont cut it when you start to do burly things on your bike.

Are you buying a complete bike or building it a custom bike? Customs are good because you can specify exactly how you want your bike, you can make it feel exactly as you want it to. The offside of this is the price. High spec parts cost alot. You can easily spend 1400 quid on a bmx with new parts.

I would go for a complete if I were you. They are good enough for beginners, and there are some real bargains out there. You can upgrade the parts as you get better, or as they get broken.

The best thing is to get a bike with the right frame. The frame is very very important. it's what everything else bolts onto, even though you don;t actually touch it that much when riding (unless you start surfin your whips lol).

So:
1. buy a full chromoly frame.

It will last you until you want to buy a new frame when upgrading parts.

2. Look at the various completes out there. They will all have different size frames. Don't just focus on top tube length, every alteration in the geometry of the frame will alter how it feels. A short back end will make the bike easier to pull into manuals, a longer frame will make it slower to spin, a tight head tube angle will make the bike twitchy etc. All of these things need to be considered before you buy the bike.

3. Don't just buy off the net straight away. By all means buy off the net when you are looking for the cheapest price, but go to a bike shop and try out different completes. Ride them around, see what feels right for you.

4. Look at the spec that you are getting from a bike. I bought an Eastern Element last year. Why did I buy it? Well, I looked at all the other bikes on the market that had hidden headsets, sealed mid bbs, cassette hubs, under 13 kilos and a 21 inch toptube. The Eastern had them all and at a third of the price of other makers.

Eastern always do good deals on their bikes. They are invariably well specced and cheap, although they have started putting cheaper paint finishes on their latest bikes (the newer ranges don't hold up to scratches anything like the old ones).

Here are some bike companies I would recommend that do pretty good completes:

Eastern;
Slosan;
Mongoose;
Specialised (yes, i know they were a mountain bike company, and that their intial bmx bikes were total rot, but they have pulled it out now and are making some good stuff.
DK (good bikes, but more expensive compared to other companies).

Every old timer says Haro, but to be honest, I don;t see much good coming form Haro.

Whoever said just going to a super market or JJB sports kind of thing is right about them being absolute crap. Don't waste your money on that rubbish. You won't even get a bike that looks the part. It will be really really heavy (unless it is made from Aluminium.. don't touch it if it is made from aluminium) and just dangerous. The bikes you buy at Decathalon or whatever are death traps, and they cost about half as much as a proper entry level bike. For about 250 quid you can get a really really good bike that will set you up for at least the next year ( My first complete still runs great) or for 100 quid, you can buy a bundle of utter crap from JJB sports that you will hate to ride and will ruin BMX for you.

Seriously, bmx is great, it is everything to me. You'll meet some really good guys (and some total idiots), have alot of fun, kill yourself every three weeks and just love every second of it. Don;t take it too seriously, and don;t take yourself too seriously, ride because it is fun, not because you want to learn every new trick and get sponsored. And stretch before you ride. torn ACLs don;t ever work the same after you destroy them the firts time!

Good luck with it, and I hope you stick with it.

Try a Diamondback. Giants are good too.
