We were lulled into false sense of security not merely by the England team, but by the media. The performance was below average, but early that morning, most of the popular papers told us about the sharpness of Mr. Rooney, and how he would make the Macedonians spin across the park all afternoon.
Only God knows what the score would have been against the sort of teams the tabloids tend to (in their surreal way) 'respect'. Feel sorry at the supporters who swallowed the stories of such papers like a fine wine (or perhaps a Red Bull & vodka). It is easy to write 'ah well.it was a clean sheet', but I suspect a large percentage of supporters in Manchester expected to return home with dizzy triumph, upon what they were told!
Even the semi-patronising prose directed at Macedonia by the announcers on telly began to melt during the second half. Could be we will learn the hard way again if we take in the part-Churchillian nonsense of the press, concerning the national team.

You can't win every game. Be positive, it was another clean sheet, and it could have been worse.
So disapointing for English football.they were playing so bad,without ideas for a team playing,without a concrete chances for a goal against Macedonia-the country whic is 51st in FIFA rang list.Congradilations for Macedonian players,especialy for theyre goalkeeper who was (for my opinion) the man on the match.Ones again Englis football was so cr*p,the players are overrated and overpaid and there must be a lot of changes if England wants to win Europe cup or World cup.

The performance is what the english public should expect, they are no the best team in the world and won;t be for some considerable time, so get used to it. Regardless of how many players THE SUN puts on their front page with Tommy hats on, it won't make any difference. be happy for what you have got, and enjoy a nice holiday every two years following your team

Poor. I love football, watch lots of games, couldn't watch all last nights game as it was awful. England were poor in the last third, Gerrard Played poorly, not his usual self and shown how 2 dimensional England can be. Maclaren needs to be more Selective in picking his team, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney don't always work together well, sometimes, Wright-Phillips or another 'lesser' player may be the key.
To be perfectly honest i thought it was great! go on macedonia,i guess i`ll be able to read the back pages of the newspaper this morning without that shower of crap dominating the last fifty back pages!
It is UNREALISTIC to expect McClaren's England to be outstanding in play, or to win in style; the English FA, the English media, the English fans have all enjoyed masturbating themselves on a national scale, feeling good each time you thrash a Faroe Island or an Andorra. It ends there!! Do you really believe McClaren will deliver EURO2008? What a laugh!
