Yes - all the goals in the later stages of the world cup came from set pieces and he provides the best crosses and free kicks. Against Macedonia the corners were woeful and now Hargreaves has broken his leg and Lennon injured there is a space for him to play.

In easy games such as Andorra I would play Beckham at right back after all he would have no defensive responsibilites and does need the pace to beat a man before crossing.
Lets face it one good half against Greece, not as many goals as we should have got against Andorra and a ropey game in Macedonia is hardly an encouraging start. We don't control midfield, whack it long and invite pressure and can't defend set pieces.

He is quite limited at his age and can not really move around. he might not get to play central midfield because there are better players there like Lamps, Hargreaves, Gerrard. he might not be able to play on the wings with faster and equally good crossers of the ball like Pennant, lennon and SWP. He might get a recall with the injuries to current players and his good form but only where there is a vacancy with no better player to fill lin. I think the McClaren wants a new era of faster, more skillful and younger players and wants a clean break from the past

Lennon and Downing are bright prospects for the future, but think of the amount they could learn from even a slightly dilapidated David Beckham! He is still capable of brilliance every now and again - just look at his goal at the weekend. Even coming off the bench in a difficult game coul dgive the rest of the team a lift.
I think McLaren dropped him because Beckham chose to 'step down' as Captain. I don't believe that was Beckham's decision to make - unless he wanted to retire from international football. The manager is in a far better position to judge the impact on the team of a change of captain - and Beckham took that decison away from him.

Well, I used to be quite a fan of becham during his prime. But now I totally agree with McLaren's decision. Look, Becks does not fit into the game plan of the England team right now and he is not in great form either(although he did score a goal in the Real Madrid match). So I think even Becks is not really sure if he will make it back into the team. But anyway the English team is doing quite fine without him at the moment; Terry's a good captain and if the defense improves and Rooney learns to cantrol his temper I really dont think Becks has even the slightest chance of gettin back into the team.
