Singlespeed cycles?

i am considering getting a singlespeed, what is a good make to go for and what would you recommend as important. I am in the UK, does anyone know of any decent sites as i can't find many good ones searching.

Answers:
There are a number of good single speed bikes out there. Going the custom route will give you a very nice bike but you will definetly pay for it. There is a very nice bike manufacturer over in the UK making sweet single speeds for a good price. On-one bikes are nice rides for the price. check out their site http://www.on-one.co.uk/index.php?module.
I would definitely go for a handbuilt frame from the likes of Roberts Cycles, or Ribble, perhaps Terry Dolan or something like that. Depends where you live. The guys at this type of shop will make sure the thing fits you correctly and also ensure you get the best components. Buy a copy of Cycling Weekly on Thursday and you can't go wrong.
Bianchi Pista, Specialized Langster are very popular.
Don't spend money on a bike if you're not sure you're going to enjoy it. Find an old steel frame that fits and convert it to a single speed / fixed gear.

The pista is a nice bike, but you'll save a lot of money by building one first.
have you ridden a fixed wheel bike? OMG it nearly killed me! never again
I own a Fuji, but Electra makes nice ones. Best bet is to go to your local bike store and try some out. I'm sure they have the same brands in the UK as they do in the US and Canada.
I currently own a Bianchi Pista and a Gunnar ruffian. The Pista is actually a track bike. There is no rear brake mounting, so unless you are going to ride it fixed, you'd better be very careful. I always ride fixed, it will develop excellent pedalling discipline and strength. The Gunner is American and made for off road (MTB) at is just like a regular MTB but has one gear. You should follow the advice of the other answer. Build one first from an old steel frame. It will save tons of money and give you a feel for it. Also, consider ratios carefully. 2:1 is a good starting point. That's 32 up front and 16 in the back. (off road) The stronger you get the bigger gear you can go with.
Have fun. It's a great twist.
