Why do people watch wrestling?
People over the age of eight, that is.

It's a sport, a fun one at that ! It also appeals to all ages

they like escapism and make beleive, personally i think its far to over the top, i used to like big daddy and giany haystacks

Wrestling is cool.
grown men, muscular and almost naked writhing on the floor as if they were just one beast - where else could you watch such sport apart from gentlemen's clubs in Soho?
Answer's simple. Because although we ALL know that it's role play/acting, it's all great entertainment. Those guys are great athletes and sportsmen and whilst you might think "it's fixed", the moves they are making made to reduce the likelihood of injuring each other and so on, they still need enormous skill to carry them off effectively and the chances of injury are very real!
So I watch it because it's fun, thrilling, exciting and enjoyable. What other reasons would one want? :)
For the same reason they watch soap operas, game shows, and reality TV. Escapism, drama, and maybe some humor.

I can't stand it nowadays; the Yanks make it so over-the-top and their commentary...ugh!
I used to enjoy watching Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Jackie Pallo, etc., but Mick Mcmanus was very naughty. That was when we had wrestling on UK TV with reasonably sensible commentators.
I never watch unless there is nothing else on TV and I am so bored I feel like standing in traffic.
But when I do watch it is because it is SO FUNNY, It is beyond the point of ridiculous and far beyond absurd.
(SHHHhhhhhh... sorry I forgot. There are still people that believe it's real. Don't tell them it's NOT! LMFAO!!)

for the thrill and excitement in watching two guys battle each other on. yes it is fake, the storylines especially, but its the wrestlers themselves and their personalities which carry it off so well

I have 3 or 4 friends that are in their late 30s & early 40s that are so into wrestling they tape wrestling matches just in case one of them misses one. I compare these guys to women & soap operas. I guess wrestling is a form of soap opera, just without the kidnapped baby & good looking doctor, but pretty much everything else.
I guess this isn't the exact reason why, but my friends can't really explain why they watch it either.
Same reason people watch CSI or How I Met Your Mother. Entertainment.
If you just refer to the WWE. then I dont have an answer for you. The WWE is a pile of crap now because it focuses on poor talent and crap storylines rather than a realistic style of Professional Wrestling. You will also find that many teenangers watch WWE. there not just 8 years or younger.
However, when your say 'wrestling'. there are actually some proper-style promotions out there. These promotions have some legit wrestlers (submission style wrestlers) that have been trained PROPERLY!! Many of these wrestlers do the proper MMA stuff also.
Dont get me wrong. the WWE have some decent real life fighters, but the WWE doesnt utilise it because it refers itself as "entertainment". Because the WWE is the biggest promotion, it is also the most watched. and people always refer to Pro Wrestling by the WWE.
Look into Japan dude. much better stuff.. or you could watch Pride of UFC, etc instead.
