The major difference was in the attitude of players. There were few, if any "crybabies" Most high school and many college and pro football players played both ways and survived. A lot of people played for the love of the game..and never did you hear of someone selected for the All-Star game not playing so they could rest. You had starting and relief pitchers in baseball.not one inning or one hitter specialists. There was very little use of foreigh substances, other than a beer or two.
I played AAA baseball for $7500 for a full season.and loved it just to have the chance. I played both ways in football in high school and wasn't really tired until the next day and it was a good tired.and many athletes played 2-3 sports back then. No one did dances in the end-zone or anywhere else after doing what they were supposed to.like make a tackle or catch a pass.
Bottom line.there was teamwork, love of the games, amateur athletes in the Olympics..and in my opinion, it was a better world.
Poorly paid, or totally amateur. Lower fitness levels. Shortage of suitable technology to analyse technique(eg. video playback). Inferior equipment. Shortage of performance- enhancing scientific knowledge.
