Why is it called a touchdown?

Answers:
A touchdown is analogous to a Rugby try, with the major difference being that for a try the football has to be placed on the ground, a requirement abolished decades ago in gridiron football.
what?
it touches the ground hence touchdown
because u touch down! You land, u r on ground hence- 'touchdown' its not gonna be called lift off is it.
In Rugby League/Union you have to touch the ball down on the ground.

American Football simply borrowed the saying.
I know what u mean, its called touchdown as per latin saying 'touchey downe'
Cos it don't sound right if they say 'touch up'! Sounds kind of gay don't you think!! Especially with a load of body built men!!
because you touch the ball to the ground so the ball toughes down
The reason its called a touchdown is because the rules in american football is that a player must touch the ball to teh ground when they go through the goal and they cannot bounce the ball on the field. If they do then the score is disqualified and the player is fined.
in the beginning they had to actually touch the ball down to the ground to score a touchdown.
coz you have to touch the ball down in the endzone..silly
