I was at Old Trafford and have held a season ticket for 12 years since I was 10. Over the years the atmosphere has declined hugely. Even more so in the past 5 yrs. European nights used to be the few games a year where a decent atmosphere could be guaranteed but that isn't so. In answer to your question english football has gone wrong in being too commercial. United players are banned by the club from signing autographs or appearing in photos with fans because basically it undermines the clubs merchandising. This is ridiculous. and you can't blame people for being disenchanted. Another problem at Old Trafford is that of the core who were responsible for chants and atmosphere (cause there's always been the south stand sit down shut up applaud politely lot) half left when the devil, sorry glazer, took over. That was their choice but it has been detrimental to the mood inside OT. Lastly the absurd ticket prices mean that for less significant matches many proper fans give it a miss, esp if they're saving for a big game live liverpool at the weekend. You then get lots of day-trippers and newbies who know nothing about supporting a football team. The lesson for football is if you sanitise football, treat them as customers, out price grass roots fans (ie enthusiastic teenagers, average Dads of 2 with a mortgage and normal wage), and only welcome middle-class families who come once a year, then the result will be a game that's treated as a show, or entertainment, not a sport with supporters. I'll close with this ditty I heard on the tram on the way home, lets hope it gets an airing at the weekend "Steve Gerrard Gerrard, he kisses the badge on his chest, then puts in a transfer request, Steve Gerrard Gerrard".
When all the foreigners came in to play and manage it and when it stopped being a sport and became a business.
I am also a Liverpool fan! C'm on the Pool, let's beat Bordeaux. YNWA.
Yes as unlike most clubs, Manchester United fans come from all over the world, not just from a 5 mile radius like my club Bolton Wanderers. This is the case with a lot of big clubs such as Chelsea, Old Trafford is so big it is unreal. I go their to watch Bolton every year, and every year the 3,000 or so Bolton fans make more noise than the 70,000 United fans
They wish they where at Anfield.
I can't believe that but Man u hav got the best supporters ibn the world & i'm won of them.
Too may corporates, tourists and day trippers are killing the soul of the game!! Thats what happens when you go from being a fan to a "customer"!! At £30.00 a ticket the working class regulars can hardly afford this week in week out and who can pay that and afford to take their kids every week aswell?? What happened to the so called family club AF seems to quote on a regular basis?? Price the kids out of the game and there goes your future loyal & voiciferous support!
