Where does the word par come from in golf?

Answers:
The word par didn't really come from golf in the first place.
"Par" was a word in use along time ago in genral population before it acquired it's golf meaning. The genral meaning of the word "Par" is average, ordinary, usual. When the term entered the golf lexicon in like the 1890's [or somewhere around then im not sure about the positive date..sorry] it was often used interchangeably with bogey. At that time, bogey meant the ideal score, and the term "bogey" was more widely used then the term "Par".

Over time, and by the early 1900s, the two terms acquired their current golf meanings. "Par" came to denote the ideal score for the best golfers, while "bogey" was applied to a score that recreational golfers would be happy with.

"Par" was only officially added to the golf lexicon in 1911, when the USGA defined it as "perfect play without flukes and under ordinary weather conditions, always allowing two strokes on each putting green."
i think it stands for players average
It comes from the same root as parity -- the
implication being that making a par is being even with the hole's
standard.
Course rating, like golf, has its origin in the British Isles. The first measure of course difficulty was par. The word par is derived from stocks; i.e., "a stock may be above or below its normal or par figure." British golf writer A.H. Doleman in 1870 asked Davie Strath and Jamie Anderson, two professionals, what score would be required to win The Belt at the then 12-hole course at Prestwick. Their response was that perfect play should produce a score of 49. Mr. Doleman called this par for Prestwick and when Young Tom Morris scored two strokes over par for three rounds (36 holes) to win The Belt, the term stuck.

Average
Round!

Just made that up, but it's pretty good!
Par is a scoring system used mostly in amateur and club golf. It involves scoring (+1, 0, -1) based on results at each hole. The objective is to have the highest positive score.

Happy golfing!
