12 month agreement with Total Fitness - Never use it? How do I get out of it?

Despite me telling my partner that I do not have time to go to a gym, last January I eventually agreed to sign up for a 12 month membership at Total Fitness leisure centre just to stop her nagging me. After joining I tried to do my best to go but due to work commitments etc in the past 9 months I have only managed to go SEVEN times and she has only been FIVE times! I knew this would happen and so having already paid over £600 it has turned out to be a very expensive mistake signing up.
Due to recent massive financiual commitments we can no way afford to keep paying £80 per month for something we are unable to use and so we cancelled the direct debit. Now Total Fitness have told us that we have to pay the remaining £300 to cover till the end of the 12 months or they will take further action. I think this is totally unfair. They've had so much money out of us already for something we are obviously unable to make use of. Surely I can cancel this contract when it was obvioulsy a mistake

You signed a legal contract. It doesn't matter if you don't use their services, you still owe them the money, and they will sue you to get it.
Get a doctor's note saying you have a medical condition, and can't work out. My sister in law did that to get out of her contract..
80 pounds a month!! Damn that's a lot, I pay 30 pounds but I too am stuck with a 12 month contract with fitness first. I rarely ever go, but I only got 4-5 months left to go! As far as I know you can't get out of it.
Unfortunately its a contract like any other. You signed it and agreed on it now your stuck with it. Yes they can take you to court for it. It may have been a mistake but it was yours by saying yes to it. Why don't you just make a little time to try it again. If not ask if you can sell the remaining months to someone who might use it. Its worth a try. Good Luck.
your unfortunately stuck with this. It happened to my wife and they have very tight contracts (which you sign with your membership)
The person who suggested a Doctors note is being very hopeful, most doctors would not sign something unless it was genuine.
Have you tried approaching the manager (ask for an interview in confidence) tell them your financial situation has changed and your not able to afford this amount any longer, they may be able to come to a compromise and offer you less services for less money.. Good luck

This is how gyms make money. They know people have good intentions in the beginning, so they get them to sign long-term agreements. Then, after a couple of months (or less), people stop going, but they still have to pay since they signed a contract. I think you are pretty much out of luck.
IGNORE THEM, I DO NOT THINK THEY WILL TAKE ACTION
