Why was Sven ever employed to manage the England Football Squad?
Answers:
If you cast your mind back to 2001, it was because no decent English manager was prepared to do the job. Especially, after all the bad press Keegan got at the time. A thankless task.
Sven was simply the highest profile manager available at the time. Plus it was deemed that his experience in the Italian league would give the England squad a continental flavour. Something that was very lacking at the time with Keegan.
Because we all like ABBA
I guess they thought that he was good. If I remember correctly, in the 2002 World Cup, England did not do too badly.
only god no's the answer to that one, so if your out there god.....please enlighten us
I can only think that there where no other applicants for the position.
Like Thomas_V said.who else was their? We'd had the worst tournament in years (yes Euro 2000 was far worse than World Cup '06), we'd lost the last match at Wembley to Germany, Keegan had stormed off. We had a match away to Finland that we drew 0-0 under the guidance of Howard Wilkinson (one of the main candidates for the job if I remember rightly). We needed fresh thinking. Sven gave it. He had the credential too, having won the Italian League with Lazio who hadnt won it for 30 odd years (ignore the many millions he spent achieving it, money they didn't have). Until we went out of World Cup '02 every one was happy. Then we lost to Brazil, and everyone realised that England were still beatable. The problem was that Sven took us to the next level.unfortunately that level wasn't enough, and for the last 2 years we've treaded water. We again need new blood, again we've started well under a new coach. Question is, can Steve Mclaren keep the team fresh, keep it evolving and get us to win a major tournament?
Sven was the result of the same clowns who picked all the other previous dough-balls getting to pick another dough-ball only this time it cost a lot more money. A change of regime is required for any progress to be made.
Its quite simple really, his a damn good manager, thats why he was employed by the fa, if he won the world cup people would kiss his ***, the players are to blame, not sven, yes he should take some blame but flops like rooney should look at them selfs
at the time he was employed he must have been good..
coz the FA is crazy?
He had a good resume from Italy after his successes with Lazio.
Guess he was overated just like the captain he chose.
He was the best available manager at that time, and all English football manager shied away from the job afetr the media crucified Keegan. So we really dug our grave. But he was a good politician.
Its a very good question, have no idea whatsoever, won some trophies in foreign leagues, not international management experince i suspect that they really wanted arsene whinging frenchman wenger at the time but becuase david dein ddint want him to leave arsenal he steered the fa in the useless swedes direction. Well the foreigner in charge experiment didnt work and hopefully mclarens opening run will continue
to show u how not to manage a football(soccer) team
