I am being pestered by my 10 year old to go fishing, what do I need and how do I use what I get?
Answers:
just buy a set of golf clubs and don't bother with the fishing.
A bamboo cane some string a stopper and hook use crickets they seem to work best.
Don't know if this will be of much help but a couple of the local fisheries near me hire out equipment etc and allow you to catch a couple of fish for about £20 for a half day. Might be worth your while enquiring at places local to you, have fun.
If you live near a Gander Mtn or Cabelas stop in there. They can get both of you set up with a starter set for not too much $$.
and don't forget a fishing license!!
just have fun.either buy some basic poles or use some line tied to a stick.we always used night crawlers, and dont forget hooks and sinkers. oh yeah and a cork to make if a lil easier and fun to tell when you get a bite.
And if you are fishing in a public place (ie..not a private pond or such) you may want to get a liscense or you could be fined.
That should get you set just to have fun fishing
If I were you I would borrow the stuff, you must have a friend who is a secret fisher (not many people own up to it) even I have a rod. Don't buy much because your son will probably get bored and never go again. You will need; a rod each, a net, maybe some grub (purchased from a fishing store, or you could dig for them in your garden) and some hooks.
Sounds like some good quality time, and you may just find out that you enjoy the peaceful serenity. Get you a couple of poles, some barbed hooks, a roll of 10-15 lb test line, take a knife to cut with,a towel to clean your hands, and a bucket to keep water in for the fish, or a fish streamer(to put through the fish's gills) its a piece of metal with some rope- so the fish don't get away. Oh and don't forget weight, or bobbins depending on if you are going to fish on the bottom or the top. Then most definitely get you some bait. That depends on what your fishing for, you can use red worms, night crawlers, minnows, or even chicken livers for catfish. Good luck I hope you have a great time, and it's great clean-stay out of trouble fun for the kids! Oh and don't forget some places require a fishing license.
You're going to need a couple of cheap fishing poles. You can get some half way decent ones at walmart for about $15 that includes rod, reel, and line. You'll also need some hooks with barbs on the shanks to hold the bait on. Then you need some beef liver to cut into pieces as you fish. Get some medium weight sinkers too. Then you cast your line out and prop your poles up on a couple of forked sticks stuck into the ground. Then you sit and visit with your son and enjoy looking at the water until miraculously the pole begins to move and line starts to feed out. Then you grab your pole, set the hook and pull in a catfish. Later on you can teach him how to bass fish but catfish is the easiest to catch and tasty as well.
You're going to want to get spinning gear, not those cheap and annoying egg shaped spin-casting rigs. If you go to Wal-Mart or similar you can pick up a lightweight fiberglass or maybe even a graphite rod and plastic reel combo from a decent company like Shakespear, Eagle Claw, Berkeley, and others, for about $15 to $30 each. On Sale is best. You'll want to get a 6' - 6 1/2' rod for use on various small to medium fishes and a light to medium rod and a reel for use with 4-6 pound test fishing line.
Next comes the fishing line. I prefer 6 lb Berkeley Trilene in green. I never skimp on quality to buy the cheap bulk line.
Next you'll need some snap swivels, smaller ones. And for hooks I always go with Gamakatsu "bait holder" hooks in plain metal color. Sure it's expensive, but they're the sharpest. Size 6 and 8. I always tie my own line and never buy the Eagle Claw pre snelled hooks.
Then a package each of 1/4 and 1/2 ounce sliding egg sinkers, lead weights.
Here's the line set up:
reel----------0@------?
@ swivel
0 sliding egg sinker
? hook
For bait I use salmon eggs for some trout, Power Bait in glitter chartuese (sp?) "rainbow" for trout, and fresh nightcrawlers for trout, catfish, bass, and crappie.
You might want a small hand net, pair of pliers, cooler for any fish you catch, and while you're at it, pick up a proper fishing license for yourself, ask about the regulations for where you're going, and make sure you don't need any extra "stamps." No use getting a ticket your first time out.
I use the Palomar Knot for almost everything:

Just buy basic stuff, Buy some books and have a read of them before you set off out fishing.
Somebody at a good tackle store will give you some good advice on how to get started they are pretty genuine folk.
My buddy started and hasnt looked back since.
Good luck & enjoy your self.
Before you rush out and buy a lot of expensive equipment, why not go somewhere local, to see people actually fishing, get talking to them, and pick their brains!
I started with Walmarts fishing section many years back. It is the cheapest way to get fishing. They have specific kits available for certain species of fish. Usually the person behid the counter knows a few things about the local fishing. Otherwise call your local bait and tackle shop and buy the bait from them and they will spew out the info.
Maybe you should go to a local fishing store and look around ask some questions, get the feel of it, the easiest reel to fish with is the spinning reel and when you buy one you don't want it too cheap. to bad you didn't tell us where your location was then i could point you to some places to shop, oh well I'll just name some fishing shops and fishing holes.
If you live in California area here are some choices ,Fishermens hardware in long beach , of course there's Big5, Kmart, Walmart, Longfin that's in Irvine Ca, Sav-On Tackle that's in Norwalk Ca, Rick's bait n Tackle that's in Long Beach Ca, . And places to fish well that depends where you go . If you fish in a privately owned lake then you don't need a fishing license ,like at Irvine Lake you don't need a license ,but if you go to Santa Ana River Lakes or Anaheim lakes you do . Or if you want to do some salt water fishing Don't forget to get a linense because they will fine you .
Mine loves going fishing with her Dad . They go every weekend at Irvine Lake .You might want suit up for Trout fishing it Opens up at Irvine Lake in October 2006 thats at the end of the month Or you can go to Santa Ana River lakes or Anaheim Lakes be sure you call the lakes S.A.R.L and Anaheim Lakes to see witch one is open cause they're sister lakes not too many know that . Oh yea Irvine is closed on Tuesdays. But are open the rest of the week.
You can also go camping at Irvine Lake. Irvine Lake also has a
cafe and a tackle shop they sell frozen bait and live bait frozen ,shrimp, and mackeral and live nightcrawlers cute little guys. Have a Wonderful Time Fishing with your kid !! :~)
When I started fishing at the age of 9, my grandfather just kitted me out with a handline, some hooks and some weights. With some sandeels or a mackerel cut up for bait, I used to just drop the bait over the side of the pier and the looks on the faces of the other fishermen with their expensive rods was priceless when I would bring in fish after fish whilst they caught nothing! I then progressed by getting a rod n reel for Christmas and it all snowballed from there.
My boyfriend is an avid fisherman and he told me to tell you to get a Zebco 202 fishing rod/reel kit it has everything you need to get started. How do you use it, well if the reel is not already strung you are going to have to put the monofiliment line on the reel, tie a hook on the end use split shot sinkers and a bobber on your line. If I were you I would use worms rather than artificial bait for just starting out. Another thing you will want is to have patience. You can go to any Walmart and get this item and get a beginners fishing book (how to) Good luck and have fun. Don't forget your fishing license, your child can go without a license but you need one and you can get that at walmart as well.
have a look in your classifieds or free ads you might get all you need in one go, you might need to go to a angling shop for the other bits ie- hook, floats.
Because he's under 12 he wont need a license, but if you want to have a go you will, its not cheap to start but if you catch you will go again.
You can get book as that will give you some idea of what to do, do you know anyone who fishes to help you?
Go to a local tackle shop and have a chat, if possible during the week when it is quiet. Fishing tackle has got quite cheap these days, a lot of it comes from China. Only buy one lot of tackle and give it a try. When you get to the lake or river there will always be other anglers willing to pass on their expertise to you. Your son/daughter may not take to it and then at least you haven't wasted too much money. If he likes it then he has endless hours of enjoyment ahead of him and you may take to it too. Good luck!
Are you in UK try Argos or local fishing tackle shop for a starter coarse fishing outfit. They provide all you need and you should get a booklet on how to get started. I don't think 10 year olds need to buy licenses but check with the Post Office
depends on where you live find a local tackle shop and ask there
Some good advise for you !! Firstly get some Fishing magazines, they will tell you what you need to know and secondly don't make the mistake of buying expensive tackle, the little fella may not like it and when you get going take him somewhere he will catch fish, if they don't catch anything they loose interest,..hope this helps.good luck !!
You need a new attitude. Once you get it use it gratefully.
You are very lucky to be in the position of having a 10 year old that wants to take YOU fishing.
Get over yourself!
These people are really jerking you around. You best bet would be to figure out what species of fish you are after, then do a little pinpointed research. A lot of the usual fishing magazines have places on the web that will come up on a search engine once you type in the species. Check over the articles and see how to fish for the location that you plan on fishing at that time of year.
You can usually get a lot of helpful pointers from a local bait and tackle shop, but again, be careful, as some of these places will try to jerk you around too. Also, if you choose to buy rods, reels, bait, etc. there, be careful. Some of these places will try to sell you everything in the store. The best option for doing any dealing with the bait shops is to check several of them before spending a dime.
If there is a place that you know of that people ofen fish, go there and ask around. Usually the locals can give you the best advice on a reliable bait shop. Once in a great while, they will even give you sound advice on where and when to fish. If you can afford it, the single best option is to hire a charter, or fishing guide. They will usually supply all of the rods, tackle, and even tie hooks on. They will try their best to keep the fish coming, as their tip depends on it. After you see what the guide has for tackle and how he has you fish, if you two decide to keep after it, you will have a much better idea of how to get started in your area.
I would keep it simple as a young child can get bored fast. pole should be a light outfit with 6-8 lb line. use a number 10 size hook with a small splitshot and a small bobber about 3 feet up from the sinker. For bait go to a bait store and get some beemoths and tip the hook with one. This will drive the bluegills nuts and action should be pretty fast and this will help them from getting bored. good question. I like to see people taking younsters fishing.
You'll need all of the aforementioned equipment but more than anything you will need a lot of patience. Kids tend to really test your patience when you take them fishing.
You will need most importantly a rod licence. Without this you cannot fish. You will then need a rod, reel, line, floats, lead shot, hooks, disgorger, bait. It can be quite expensive to start, but always look for bargains.Try www.bosfish.co.uk for some cracking deals.
