4-4-2 or 3-5-2 or 3-4-3??
having a debate with my friend, i say 4-4-2.

I would tend to say 4-4-2. Some say it lacks the width required for the modern game, but that sounds like a load of old balls to me.
Although the best formation actually depends on the opposition. You would want a formation that attacks the opponents at their weakest. And a team that can handle changing formation if the opposition gets the measure of the formation they started out with.

Italy used 4-3-3 which was effective, Lippi is a master. I knew full well the first time I saw the formation they would do well with the new offensive punch and still solid defence.

Actually, I don't think there is such thing as a best formation. It all really comes down to with what formation the coach can get the most out of his players with, and also depends on the opponent's playing pattern.
