I am going to play golf for the first time in ages, does anyone know what distance any club would carry a ball

For example What club would I use to tee off on a 160yrd fareway? or if I hit a ball with a 3 wood how far would it travel?
I understand it depends on how good the player is but a general base line would be good.

Answers:
Ok, start with your 5 iron. This goes anywhere from 150- 200 yards. Now for each club you select up, meaning 6,7,8 iron, decrease each shot distance by 10 yards. For each club you select down, meaning 4,3,2 irons, add 10 yards to your distance.
depends on the clubs
IF YOU HIT IT HARD IT WILL FLY!!11
3 wood - 3 yards
5 iron - 3 yards
Sand wedge - 3 yards
Putter - 3 yards

I am Tiger Woods
Your second answer has the right idea. As you say a lot depends on you and how well you hit the ball.
I consider myself an average golfer. I play off 17.
I usually work on hitting my pitching wedge around 100yds. As the previous guy said, add 10 yds on for each club. For example 110 yds for your 9 iron, 120 for your 8 iron etc. So 160 yds would be your 4 iron. Into the wind add an extra 1 or 2 clubs. With the wind take 1 or 2 off.
You should expect to hit your 3 wood between 180 and 200 yds
Hope this helps. Have a good round
i think about standard would be
7- iron = 150 yards,
then for every iron bigger add ten yards, and lower minus ten yards:
6-iron =160
5-iron = 170

8-iron = 140
9-iron = 130 etc etc.

I find a 5-wood goes about the same distance as a 3 or 4 iron and is easier to hit

hit your 3 wood if your irons won't reach and only use your driver off the tee (unless your tiger woods)

My handicap is lower than the guy above so this might just be what i go by, whatever works for you, you have to find out for yourself. depends how big you are and how well you strike through the ball
good luck!

PS tiger hit a 9-iron 220 yards a couple of weeks ago, if you find you can hit one half that distance you're going to be fine!
Teeing off on the fairway?

The bases given so far seem to fit fairly well.

I'm about 150 with a 5 iron, then plus or minus ~10 yards for each iron longer or shorter.
3 wood - ~240-260 yards
driver 280-300
a reasonable player lets say a handicap 14-16 could hit 160yds with a 6/7 iron or thereabouts.

a 3 wood from the same player would run 220-250 depending how good the player is, how good the ball is, what the fairway is like, etc

for a 28 handicap assuming you are not going to be at your best then you may be better off hitting a 4 or 5 iron to reach 160

as a rule of thumb though if you are getting back to the game and are at beginner level then you may be best to play your short game - i mean tee off with a 7/8 iron and practice hitting the thing straight and practicing your swing. giving the ball all you can with a wood when you get back to the game is going to end up in frustration walking around in the rough trying to find your ball - you'll get a better round score if you play a simple game to start with then get a bit more adventurous with your clubs as you improve. people may look at you funny teeing off with an 8 iron but its best to land on the fairway at 150yds than land on a different fairway or even worse to lose your ball and have to drop a shot!
If your playing for the first time in ages then remember that it is doubtful you will gain spin on the ball therefore take off 10-15yards from the distances above for true carry, the rest will be made up in roll.

Also 150yrs is average for a 7 Iron and you do go down in 10yrd increments for shorter irons but for longer irons you go up in 15-20yrds from 5iron up to 1 iron.
If you're playing for the first time in a long time (and weren't all that hot even back then), then it's going to come down to how cleanly you hit the ball.

If you're tall and strong, then making good contact with a 3-wood might get you 250 yards - if you're shorter or swing more slowly (or just throttle back to try to control it, which isn't a stupid idea) then it might only go 180.

If you try to hit it too hard and top it you'll get about 10 feet.

My handicap's mid-twenties but I hit pretty short - I ought to be playing my 5-iron on a 160-yard hole, but I'd probably chicken out and use a 7-wood, especially if it was uphill or wet.
hit some ball at the driving range and find out what YOUR distance is. it is guaranteed to be a lot shorter than the distances posted in these answers for experienced players.

never use a club because "you are supposed to use club "X" from this range" always use a club that will get the ball where it needs to for you. if you need to use 3 iron to reach a green from 140 yards, then do that. don't use a 8 iron and come up short because other golfers use an 8 iron from that distance.
IF YOU PLAY LIKE ME, ANY CLUB YOU HIT WILL CARRY ABOUT AS FAR AS THE CLOSEST WATER HAZARD.
