Under the rules of golf, what sort of objects can be used to mark the position of the ball on the green?

Answers:
There is no rule that says what you must use.

As long as it doesnt damage the putting surface, can be moved if it impedes another players stroke and clearly indicates where the ball should be replaced, you can use anything. A tee, a coin, a marker, pencil etc etc

Rule 20-1
golf.com has some great rules available. Personally, I use the little button on my glove, a marker from the course, or something small like a dime..I suppose you could mark it with like a big ole garbage can lid, but the person you are playing with my object when you cover the hole LOL
anything that doesnt impede the play of others
The official rules of golf have the following to say:

When the player's ball is to be teed within the teeing ground, it must be placed on:
* the surface of the teeing ground, including an irregularity of surface (whether or not created by the player), or

* a tee placed in or on the surface of the teeing ground, or
sand or other natural substance placed on the surface of the teeing ground.

A player may stand outside the teeing ground to play a ball within it.

In teeing, if a player uses a non-conforming tee or any other object to raise the ball off the ground, he is disqualified.
you can use a tee, the marker on your club or the one on a pitch. Most pros use coins. technicaly, you can use anythig as long as it doesn't hurt the green and take to much place (such as your hat.)
just about anything the size of a coin that just lays on the green
