What is it that makes people think?

ex-players make good managers ( ref roy keane )

Answers:
I do prefer to see a manager prove his worth at a lower level and work his way up. I really respect someone like Martin O'Neill who was successful early on at Wycombe Wanderers and then went on to bigger things. He was a successful ex-player but didn't end up automatically getting a big job (although he probably didn't start at a Sunday league pub team either).

Keane at Sunderland, Southgate at Boro and Coleman at Fulham have all been employed because of their drive, determination and experience on the pitch. It's also funny that the first thing they do is to employ an assistant with loads of management experience. I saw that Keane is after Brian Kidd. Why didn't Sunderland just employ Kidd? Because they need a big name to front it and it's the publicity that matters.

Additionally, I think Gareth Southgate is going to fall flat on his face. He is well out of his depth. Keane will get a couple of good results out of Sunderland but they will slump before Christmas.
Just A Guess but i'd say the Human Brain
Maybe they think they might just understand the rules of the game, and also know what it feels like to be on the field and therefore make better decisions.
All managers are ex-players
yea cause they understand the game already and that will make it easier to win world series
i often wondered why teams hire former players in baseball as hitting coaches that had a career average of .220 but thing is i mean more people have the knoledge of how the games are played and not the ability to perform on a pro level(me).
The need.
coz of experiance
past experiences, past mistakes, past achievements and so on.
Arsenal, Chelsea, MU and Liverpool..good teams? Their bosses were not that good players, see?
Experience of being part of a team.
its better known by doing rather than spectating....this may be the cause
Fergie and Wenger weren't very good players.
its not always like that..but i guess its because of their experience in the game..
Jose Mourinho did play football in Portugal for a number of small clubs he was unsuccessful so he went into managing. check the link.
If Roy Keane was in the dressing room and he told me I was dead if we didn't win, then we'd fuckin' win. He'll make Fergie look like Garth Crooks.
