Name the year and the first british football club who was first to play in the European Cup?
Answers:
Hibernian FC of SCOTLAND is the first British to enter the UEFA European Cup in 1995-1956 season. they qualified to the semi-finals before losing to the eventual runners-up Stade De Reims-Champagne of FRANCE 3-0 on aggregate.
celtic but not sure of the year sorry
no
Celtic and was it not in 67 or there abouts
Celtic were the fist to win it in 1967 but the competition started in 1956 for the champion teams of each country so the qualifying teams from England and Scotland that year (and so the first to play ) would have been Chelsea and Aberdeen
first was definitely Hibernian
as for the year ?? 1956??maby 1955??
1956.. Manchester United
Well the first season the European Cup was played for was 1955/56 so from England the champions of 1954/55 would have entered the competition and the champions of 1954/55 were Chelsea.
So if it all went to plan then it would be Chelsea.
I'm not sure about the Scots
The lack of any English club in the first European Cup tournament, allied with traditional English insularity, meant that the new competition received virtually no coverage in the land of the game’s birth. But just three months later, interest amongst the English press was stirred by the participation of Manchester United in the 1956-57 competition.
1955 League Champions Chelsea had withdrawn from the inaugural competition before it began after pressure from the Football League who feared that the new competition would create too much fixture congestion, but Manchester United, under manager Matt Busby, were determined to accept their invitation to compete in the second tournament and pressured the Football Association into backing their desire to participate in the fledgling competition.
Celtic were the first to win it in 1967, but Hibernian were the first team to play in it, i think, in 1956.
Was it not Hibernian?
