What causes shin splints?

Answers:
Impact! They're caused by the impact from walking, running, aerobics, etc. They are pretty painful, but you can ease the pain by taking ibuprofin and icing them.
idk
but my sister has em
she says they suck!
Not stretching before a excercise like usually running
I could be wrong but I've always understood it to be from coming down on your feet so hard that you break the little pouch of fluid in your ankle joint and the fluid goes up your shin, causing the little knots.
"The cause of shin splints is usually overused muscle, either an acute injury or DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness). The muscle pain is caused by any activity that involves running or jumping. An individual not accustomed to running may experience pain in the shin muscles the next day even after a single, short bout of intense running. There may even be immediate discomfort in the muscles from a build-up of lactic acid.

Shin pain may also be the result of inflammation of connective tissue such as periosteum, (Periostitis). The pain may be caused by a stress fracture in the bone or some other problem like osteosarcoma. Pain in the lower leg may also be referred from a distant area of the body, such as pressure on the sciatic nerve (sciatica) near the hip joint. If a bone problem is suspected, a bone scan can be useful in confirming the diagnosis."
They are usually overuse injuries and can be caused by running on hard surfaces or running on tip toes. It is also common in sports where a lot of jumping is involved. If you over pronate then you are also more susceptible to this injury.

These sites will give you a great deal of information including suggestions for treatment.

I hope this helps.
you basically get shin splints when your working out too hard or too long. you also get them when your running shoes get worn out, when you are running on hard surfaces too much(try to run on softer surfaces like grass) or if you have a reallly flat arch to your foot
form taking on too much (running) at one time. basically it's your shins splintering. If you've ever gotten a splinter in your finger, thats basically all it is. your shins splintered and it's all over in your legs. they suck don't they..:)
A lot of things constitutes shin splints.Running or training on an un even or hard Torin.,using old or worn out sneakers, are a few.
Hi, I used to suffer from shin splints, drove me nuts for years, everytime i played football or went jogging, bang horrible cold pain down my shins, BUT I bought new trainers (sneakers/runners) whatever you like to call them in your part of the world. But I bought them in a proper running specialist shop where they had a machine to measure your gait, or how you place your feet on the ground while running, the assistant then suggested a pair of ASICS, specially for my type of running style, honestly I have never had shin spints ever since,

When I buy running shoes I always go to a specialist shop. tell her to try this.
Wear and tear on the body, why do they happen, not sure my daughter got them when she was in the Army. Very painful
