Best excersises for a beginner martial art student?

I have just started taking classes in karate and want to know if anyone can recommend some good excersises or routines. I'm the right height/weight and slim and dont have too much trouble but having only just started even a simple forward kick feels tight!

You could go on for ever trying to answer this question but there are four main areas you must look at with a martial art -

1) Flexibility
2) Stamina
3) Strength
4) Co-ordination

1)
Joint manipulation - Neck, shoulders, waist, hips, knees & ankles. Stretching is also essential - lower back, full back, groin. Your instructor should be able to show you how to stretch/manipulate those areas and you can work out at home with out any equipment.

2)
Try running - start slow but focus on distance. The speed at which you cover the ground insn't important but the distance is - the further you can run, the greater your stamina will be. To add to your stamina you could vary the speed at which you run/train - trick the body by changing the demands you put on it. Hill or step running is another useful tool - just like in the Rocky films! Not forgetting skipping!

3)
Weight & resistance training would be great for this - but go for reps, rather than the amoutnof max weight you can lift. Also, work the entire body int he gym & not just the areas your happy with!

4)
Shadow boxing (use a mirror), train to music (aerobics or fitness class that requires you to move & think at the same time) or train (pad work) with a mate.

Hope this is of some help.
oh man, i took up aikedo for awhile man i scrwed up my ankles
i'm in the same situation as you! try going to a gymnastics class, they have really good stretches there. touching your toes, holding onto your foot and rising it up, splits, cat stretch, etc.
Hi,

The best exersise you can possibly do to help your Karate is running supported with long periods of gentle stretching.

Running improves fitness, strength and stamina, and stretching will help to improve your flexibilty and mobility. Pulled muscles through lack of gentle flexibility training is one of the biggest problems for beginners.

Avoid weight training when you are just beginning, this can lead to muscle tension, and incorrect muscular development for martial arts.

The other muscle you need to exersise is your brain, learn to be patient and look at your training as a long term committment. :)
When you start your class your instructor should be giving you ways to stretch. But if not, then do lunges one leg at a time. Stand and try everyday to touch you toes without bending your knees. Your cardio is important too so you'll want to start jogging and that will loosen your legs up and strengthen them.
Stretch. Do stretches. as many as you can as often as you can. If you don't know any ask gymnists as they have far better stretches than most modern martial artists. A big thing to do if your just learning is muscle memory sicne your new to this i can help you regard this. Stretch the limb you want to extend out as hard and as far as you can and hold it for 10 seconds, do this ten times do this every time you stretch, your arms will begin to find this place as another home. Muscle memory is used in many things from play instruments working out and muscle memory. The best people in modern day at dveloping muscle memory is gymnists that why i say ask one of them. I may not have helped much but i hope i did. The best way to find ways to stretch is just search yahoo for a free website on stretching. Good luck!
