Hybrid bikes?
i really do like DH bikes but where i live there are no hills. I also love trick XC bikes but you have to pay a fortune to get good parts and a good frame as i like lightweight top quality. But the most amount of riding i do is to work and back and i detest roadies! Should i go for a top spec hybrid or go for a XC like the specialized s works for ridiculous money!

Do what I did.picked up a ten-year-old Giant Option from a pawn shop for next to nothing, and built it up. Nashbar has some hellacious deals on wheels and (picked up a wheelset for 50 bucks!). I got it for the frame (that, and the handlebar stem are all that's original on it now), and most of the money went into the saddle (a Brooks B66 Champion). You get what you want that way.

If your'e going to spend most of the cost of a new ride why not spend a little more and get what you want. It's like people getting the low octane gas to save money. It's only like a buck or two more for the good gas and your car will run better.
I challenge you to go out on a road bike a few times with some cool roadies, though.

One of my buddies was all mountain and would never be down for a road ride. Then I got him out and entered in a time trial. Now he likes it more than mountain - and we live in Colorado. This is mountain bike heaven.
hybrids are pretty useless in my opinion. get yourself a hardtail XC bike with lock-out forks so if you want to go out on the road all you need is a pair of slicks. i did this for year before i could afford more than one bike. good luck!
Snapped my Whyte has it right. Hard tail XC if you just can't get over the roadie issue. That way you can keep a spare set of wheels with skinny slicks for the road and also have the original set ready for weekend off road fun. A lock out on the fork is definitely a plus for road riding. Otherwise you'll be bobbing all over the place and look like a right chump.
Get a cheap Kona Smoke for going to work on.
It's only £250 and it even has mudguards!
Then you can buy a mid-price XC bike as well.
Look for a good deal on a cyclocross bike. Its not really a road bike but its faster than any mountain bike and they are a kick to ride. Really comfy and so quick, and they have that burly xc thing going for them. A little road, a little dirt, set em up as a single speed or a single chainring and 9-10 spd rear. Trust me, you wont be sorry. Redline bikes make the most affordable and best spec for the money.
I'll make this really short I'm going to tell you what i tell all my customers if your planning on riding everyday make you budget around $800 (can) any less your not going to enjoy your commute at the $800 mark you get a really well speced bike that will run well as for brand its a completely individual thing i turn customers away all the time cause they want to buy the first bike they ride you have to go to several shops find the brand that fits you the best. good luck
you should get a XC bike. i never like hybrids anyway. you dont have to get the S-Works rite away. its probably not worth it just to ride to work. you should start off with a Specialezed hardrock pro disc (about $700) its a very reliable bike and fairly lightweight.
