The ground got its name because previously the area was 'a favourite spot for outings and games', gay in those days meaning 'happy and joyous'. The first match under floodlights was a Third Division match against QPR on 21st November 1959 with the record attendance being 18917 on 26th April 1961 against promotion seeking Walsall. Being next to the river the ground often floods. They used to have someone in a coracle who used to retrieve balls which had been kicked into the river. Does anyone know if they still do this??
