The International Cricket Council has revealed that controversial umpire Darrell Hair offered to quit the sport for roughly $658,000 in the wake of the ball-tampering incident at The Oval.

The 53-year-old Australian reportedly made his offer to the ICC via email after the controversy erupted in England when he deducted Pakistan five runs after accusing it of ball-tampering.

Speaking at a news conference in London, ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said that Hair had been under severe stress since the scandal erupted.

Speed also said he was satisfied Hair had not made the offer with any "dishonest, underhand or malicious intent".

The fourth and final Test of the series between England and Pakistan was eventually forfeited by the visitors in protest at Hair's accusation.

Despite urging the media not to question the motive of Hair's email, Speed did reveal to the BBC that he had been surprised to read the contents of it.

Hair later retracted the message, although he claimed he was asking for the money as a compensation for lost earnings.

The ICC's lawyers are believed to have advised the organisation to disclose the contents of Hair's message to the Pakistan Cricket Board as they are relevant to the upcoming disciplinary case against captain Inzamam-ul-Haq for the alleged ball tampering and also for bringing the game into disrepute.

Hair is hoping to continue his umpiring career and said in a statement that his demand for money was made during a stressful time.

"This correspondence was composed after a very difficult time and was revoked by myself two days later after a period of serious consideration," he said.

"There was no malicious intent behind this communication with the ICC."

"I am anxious that the code of conduct hearing takes place as soon as possible so these matters can be resolved and allow me to move on with my umpiring."

Pakistan had complained about Hair's performances earlier in the series but the Australian has denied being biased against Asian countries.

Since it seems the umpire WENT QUITE INSANE, perhaps it'll all blow over.
Darryl Hair was exposed as a liar, canniver, racist, bigot, thief, and mentally unstable.
I have always maintained that Pakistan did nothing wrong and that Hair was creating a situation in order to exploit it for financial gain.
