Reason is because you play fewer matches, its likely at the end of round, where say only one team in a group will qualify, its possible two teams might have the same number of points, have scored same number of goals and then in the end, its the one who scored the most away, in the opponents backyard who gets to qualify.
In league competitions, you play a lot of other teams and many matches, you hardly get two teams tying with the same points. In the unlikely event they do tie and a winner of the league must be declared, a goal difference is used {subtract goals conceded from goals scored}. Team with higher goal difference wins. If both have same points and same goal difference, then a play-off (a match at a neutral venue between the two teams) will decide the champions
