Why are wrestlers barechested when they wrestle and amatuers clothed?

Because if you trace back the History of Pro Wrestling... it wasnt always a 'show'.
It use to be real.. and a 'real' Pro Wrestling match involved trunks, tight shorts or tights style clothing --- very 'similar' clothing from many of the wrestlers today in the WWE (without the gimmicks, etc).
When Wrestling became an Olympic sport.. it was a watered down version of Pro Wrestling. This was also around the time when Pro Wrestling started to turn into a 'show'. This is just one of many reasons when grappling arts became less popular. which eventually led to the striking arts instead. like Karate. Places like the UFC, Pancrase, and 'strong' style changed that!!
Kazushi Sakuraba is a modern example of Pro Wrestling. and was trained by many people like Billy Robinson, who is an example of a 'real' trained Pro Wrestler.

There are other examples of MMA that has links back to the 'real' pro wrestling. like Josh Barnett, Frank Shamrock, Ken Shamrock and even Gene LeBell!
So when you see a Pro Wrestler like Batista. remember that his 'appearance' follows the tradition of old-time wrestler, and Batista probably doesnt know that either. lol

Dont get me wrong. as many today in the WWE wear trunks to show their physiques and their all oil up, but remember where it came from. Amatuer wrestling has it's rules with clothing, Just like Judo have their rules of using 'Jackets'. You get the idea!!

Because the barechested ones are frauds. It's for 'show'. The REAL wrestlers have to abide by a code of rules, thus there is a uniform.

Sometimes they have bare chests so that the marks from chops (done by Flair, Show etc.) can be seen by the fans, which will make them go *shock* that must have hurt!
because 'pro' wrestlers tend to have a huge physique that could essentially get the crowd on their side, which would mean they would be put in more title matches, etc. whereas in the amatuer leauges it's all about ability, not fan approval.

The reasons I can see are two-fold. Number one, pro wrestlers usually have bigger muscles and so will show it off (when they make a big deal out of the physique of, say, Chris Masters, it would be counter-productive to have him wear t-shirts everywhere).
Secondly, there's a lot more movement involved, so it might be in order to lessen any restriction caused by wearing a top. Of course, not everyone goes bare chested, it may well be down to personal preference.
In any event, boxers usually go bare chested, so if that means anything to you.
