Why do Americans call their big games the world series?
when it's just Americans who take part and no other country.
Answers:
It has nothing to do with the nationality of the players involved or the supposed ego of the United States. The term "World Series" is derived from the original "World's Championship Series", coined in the 1880s when professional baseball existed almost entirely within the U.S., and proclaiming things as "World" was in fashion. The term was adopted again for the 1903 World Series and tradition has carried it forward.
As a side note, five of the seven pitchers of record in the 2005 World Series were not from the United States, so while most of the teams are located in the the U.S., it is not just Americans who take part.
That is the ego of America.
dude, it's the american way
coz they think they are the world and own it!!
it makes it sound impressive??
.Because they are too far up themselves to acknowledge the existence of other parts of the world.
Oh, sorry, when I said "up themselves", I was rude. I should have said "small-minded, self-aggrandising, parochial, provincial, ignorant and crass". I hope no-one was offended.
P.S. Threats of violence toward me will only serve to fulfill my prophecy.
So there!
Simple, as George Bush shows, they do not study Geography at school.
Because 99% of Americans think that they are the world.
Ego.
canadians play in it as well but its always puzzled me why its called that.
Did you not know - we all live in America - where you live is just a region of the World (aka America ) ..
Marketing. Its done by the sports leagues to drive interest.
Why call your sport's big game the "US Championship", when you can call it the "World Championship"? It gets more people interested and makes them more money.
Because they did not invent the English language
(No offence to the Americans, I love my own American dearly. I always tease him about how he uses bast***ised English)
They are unaware that there is a world outside America
It is because the "american" leagues are considered the elite leagues in their sports. The best players come to play in the elite leagues. Honestly calling them "american" leagues is a major misnomer. Hockey is probably 50/50 North American/Internation and Baseball is owned by Carriabian countries
Dunno, Americans are wierd that way (i hope your not American)
because they think they are the world and the world rotates around their "a" holes.just a guess, could be wrong, you tell me, am i right? or am i right?
In most cases, they are named so because of international viewers watching the game. It doesn't neccessarily mean the game is played elsewhere. While MLB for example is indeed America's Game, it has spread to other countries, most notably Japan. However, the World Series is mostly done by American players for a number of factors, including the trouble of international teams having to travel to America to compete and vice versa, which prevents it from being a "true" World Series.
NBA, on the other hand, features a different story. While the NBA Championships are only done in America, it is viewed around the globe at a large scale. Because of this, it is no surprise the title for 'champion of the world' would be given in this case.
If you're looking for a game that has the proper definition of 'World Series', aside from the Olympics, there is no other sport than Soccer.
Because it is an American game. We started the league well before any other country was even capable of mass producing wooden bats. It has been called that for over a hundred years. It is not just Americans that take part. MLB players come from around the world to play in the biggest and best league in the world. It is not even true that they are only American teams. The toronto Blue Jays and until recently the Montreal Expos are/were Canadian.
The reason for this is that Americans are like the ' Frog in the Well ' . They live inside this deep well, that is ( America). Sitting deep inside this well, they see nothing but a tiny circle of blue sky high above. That tiny circle of Blue Sky and that tiny Well is all they know and think and understand about .This is the whole World to them. So they play these ' Big Games ' .
Baseball World Series and the likes of it ! ! ! Baah ! ! !
Ego? Haha! That's rich.
Has anyone ever studied the make-up of the USA'a world class teams? At least in the Big Four pro sports?
Mexicans, Norweigians, Germans, Africans (all parts), Asians (all parts), Russians, Cubans, Canadians. every game is a world series of sorts.
Also, only one pro sport calls their championship game the World Series, Major League Baseball.
Why do the majority of you people think Americans are egotists? Just because we live in the best counrty ever in the history of the earth doesn't mean we deserve all this animosity. I think the rest of the world has penis envy.
Because we are the world and the rest of you are our little lap dogs whom we let chase their tails and say things that you think are important to you!! Wake up and smell the coffee! Hail Imperator Ieorjus Bushus II !! Bow you lowly curs and worship at the Holy Ground of Yankees Stadium before he comes to your country!
cause players from other countries play in the world series
Because players from all parts of the world participate in our sports? And to my knowledge the only sports league that uses the word "World" in their championship game/series is the MLB which has players from every single continent in the world.
Probably the most pathetic attempt at bashing America I've seen in a long long time.
Its a tradition. We had the perception that we were the only country (and Canada) who knows how to play.. that is until we lost horribly in the World Baseball Classic this past year.
Canada's involved.
I would say maybe because people from all over the world play in american sporting leagues, like in baseball the majority of the good players are not american, many of whom are from spanish, japanese, south african, netherlands and australian decent
Because the best players in the world are in the MLB.
Its not all their big games it is only baseball that their is a world series in. The reason it is called the world series is because the players come from all over the world different cultures and countrys there for many parts of the world are actually represented in a major legue baseball team. Its not just people from the U.S. playing in the majors. After all America after all is built on other nationalitys and cultures.
There is only one real sport that has a World Series-Baseball- and honestly, the talent ranges from all over the world. Yes the clubs are based in the US and Canada but the players come from the US, Canada, Mexico, Domincan Republic, Cuba, Panama, Venezuela, Curacao, Russia, Austrailia, Japan, Taiwan, North and South Korea, China, Saipan, Vietnam, Thailand and the Pacific Islands. Even though the base is in America, there is no team that is entirely American. We get the best talent in the world. Maybe you ( and I think youre European b/c usually they always question American Sports) should give Baseball a chance. Its a sport and if you like sports you will like baseball. I watch all sports and try to give every sport an opportunity. I am a big soccer fan as well and yesterday I watched a great match between Chelsea and Man City. Give American Sports a chance.
I think you will find that rather more countries than just America take part in the World Series. In any event, it takes its name from the now-defunct newspaper "The World" which sponsored the first few series.
