Hi does anyone know what ju jitsu means in english (direct interpritation of name)?

I understand ju means soft, as in judo (soft way) but what does the rest of it mean?

Answers:
as you said ju ( soft ) jitsu ( arts ) comes from middle chinese zhwit.
GENTLE/SOFT ART
I have been violated before by suggesting that some one misspelled a word in Chinese . so I don't say that you did. .. but, juudou or jyuudou has the same chararacter as juujutsu or jyuujyutsu. This is the character (yawarakai that means soft. ) So then I found a word for you but it is not ju jitsu. But it is juujutsu. The second character means something like technique . for example jutsugo means a technical word. I only have Japanese and Chinese-Japanese dictionaries. No Japanese-English . sorry.
But, I can give you a whole bunch of meaning from my Chinese-Japanese dictionary: Same as dou michi road, way. way through the village. waza, tewaza = trick, gei as in geisha and geijutsu = an art . and so on probably one of the ones I just mentioned.
It means "gentle art", although having trained in Ju-jitsu for the last 13 years I have yet to see anything gentle about it!
