When did the first major Bung allegation story brake in the UK ?
Im doing a piece of work on the bung alegations and was wondering if anyone knew what paper broke it first and the date in which it surfaced.
Answers:
Are you referring to recent allegations concerning 'Big Sam' Alledyce and Harry Redknapp? Or the actual 'first ever' allegation story in professional football?
There was a notorious case back in the 60's involving the Sheffield United Manager taking back-handers to 'fix' players transfer deals, he probably only accepted a tenner back in those days, not like the hundreds of thousands involved in todays game.
In 1995 George Graham of Arsenal got the push for taking bribes for dodgy transfer deals. More recently of course there's the new allegations of corruption involving the aforementioned.
Probably been going on undetected for decades, but I seem to recall something about twelve years ago.
Knowing the media, they probably all jumped onto it.
Sorry, I have no real answer for you.
I think it was late 'fifties / early 'sixties. There was a game-rigging scandal involving several players. A film was made about it in the 'nineties ("The Fix") starring Steve Coogan. My girlfriend at the time was an extra in it (the film, not the scandal). Sorry don't know more details
think it was in the late 50s early 60s and im sure the teams involved were Everton, and 1 of the Sheffield clubs, which lead to a couple of players being banned for life
If you're looking for the latest bung scandal.I think Mike Newell, manager of Luton Town, brought it up last season, but I can't remember when(I think very early 2006) so try starting your search from there. sorry I can't help any further
1995 - George Graham
