Why do you call boxing day.boxing day?

Answers:
boxing day is called boxing day as churched opened up the day after christmas so those who recieved presents could go around the back of the church and donate their unwanted gifts into the boxes so the church could then distribute them to the poor and use the money to refurbish the church.

you put as much as you wanted in to these boxes as it was always anonymous-only "god" judged you for your generosity

hope that helps

It'd the day all the alms boxes were opened in churches and the day the household staff were given a box of gifts from the master of the house
My boss, who is Canadian, says that it is becuase it is the traditional day that Canadian's box up the Christmas gifts.
british canadien..something about the maids boxing up the xmas gifts and return them the next day
There are disparate theories as to the origins of the term. The more common stories include:
all those gifts that people didn't want get put back in the boxes and returned on that day
Because that's when you throw out all the boxes from the christmas presents.
It was the tradition that your tradespeople, milkman, postie, coal merchant etc would pop around and you would tip them (in their tip box) for a year of service.
because way back in the day. the queen of england asked the people to put everything that they didnt need in boxes and give it to the poor people. but like everything else, it has turned into a huge marketing and commercial sham! but there ya go
i've heard it comes from the old tradition of putting the empty boxes from christmas presents out on the next day

(may or may not be true but that's what i've heard)
because its the day when all the relitives have had enough of each other, and they have good old fashioned fisticuffs',(have a fight)or boxing. At least they do where we come from.lol.
It was a tradition were any unwanted gifts and left over Christmas dinner was boxed up and distributed to the poor during Victorian times
Boxing day is atually the day on which the presents were exchanged, (in their boxes), because Christmas day itself was originally so holy that you were only supposed to be going to church and praying and generally giving thanks for the birth of Jesus etc.
So the day after was when you were allowed to celebrate in the way we all do now on Christmas day itself, exchanging presents, and eating and drinking too much.
It was a close vote between "boxing day" and "festivuss" but as history shows "boxing day" won out by a narrow margin on the judges score cards.
Because it is normally 24 hours after christmas day that you start thumping people, because they never got you what you wanted.
Boxing day is named so because it is when we clear away boxes and wrapping paper from Christmas Day. It's true name is The Feast Day of Saint Steven. Or St Steven's Day.
So called because after spending the entire day drinking mulled wine (Buckfast in the microwave) to begin with, followed by copious amounts of whatever you can lay your hands on, followed by partying at night hanging mistletoe around your waist thinking you're funny getting people to pucker up with your privates, then after 12am (12 hour shift on bevvy) people start knocking f**k out of each other! I think that this is the traditional origin of "boxing day!" It is in Scotland anyway ;-)
in the olden days the rich would go out the day after christmas and take boxes of goods to the poor, thats where the name came from.
