Can anyone tell me as to what a golf handicap is?
What does it mean if you have a handicap of 5?

The simple way of working your handicap is by averageing your last three rounds of golf. So if you play the same course all the time and the par for the course is 72 and your last 3 scores average 92 then your handicap would be 20. If you go round with an average of 77 then your handicap would be 5.

Lower you are the better..everytime you play under your handicap you come down..then when you play above your handicap you will go up 0.1!
A golf handicap starts at 36. This means you can take up to 36 shots over par (par is the number of expected shots for a given golf course). Most golf courses are par 72 so on a 36 handicap you can take 108 shots. As you play more and hand in more score cards you handicap will change (hopefully go down).
I also thought that handicap was average of 3 rounds played to obtain handicap, however on playing the 3 required rounds I was actually allocated the handicap of the LOWEST round. i.e although 2 of the rounds were in the 90's the round of 85 was used to give me a handicap of 16.
I am unsure to this day if they made a mistake and I play an average of 18 over par.
I do know that each hole is used in calculation with a maximum of 2 handicap strokes allocated per hole so for example on a par 4 hole it would make no difference scoring 6 or 10 strokes at that hole you would only receive 2 handicap for the hole. This stops one or 2 very bad holes putting handicap way up.

The better you become the less handicap you will have on the course. Now, when playing with better people. for example, a person who has a 1 handicap( averages 1 over par per round) you are given 4 shots on him to make the odds fair while playing a tournament. makes it fun for everyone, and players of all skills can compete together.
