Which event is biggest on the world stage, the olympic games or the fifa world cup?
i want to know facts and statistics rather tan opinions. Thanks.
Answers:
Well the Olympics have been around since the Roman days and its WORLD games.
That says enough right there.
Neither. The Superbowl is biggest.
The World Cup, no doubt.
Soccer is the worlds most popular and loved sport.
(the superbowl.lol. what an idiot)
The most watched event on earth is the fifa world cup. The Olympics cannot be second as more people watched Euro 2004 than the Olympics.
the Superbowl is the biggest event in America, but only Americans watch it. Little do they know but America is NOT the only place on earth where they have sporting events!
Olympics allows 200+ countries to compete at the level whereas World Cup is somewhat diluted with only 32 teams in the main event. Revenue and Sponsorship would roughly be the same.
got to be the fifa world cup. bigger and better than anything the yanks could dream of
The Fifa world cup of course!.soccer as the Americans like to call it is not called the beautiful game for nothing. Its so simple and joyfull that most people enjoy watching. Same cant be said about the Olympics as their different sports which some people wont enjoy, hence the viewing figures wont be high as the beautiful game. So my conclusion the beautiful game (soccer) wins by a canter!
World cup all the way!! The olympics are massive, but its nothing compared with the excitement the world cup brings!
Amarican football, don't make me laugh!!!
FIFA World Cup! However, at the olympics there is also soccer involed meaning that the two could be the same in popularity.
I personally like the Olympics better, but the World Cup is the biggest by far.
although the world cup is huge and the olympics are bigger, why has everyone overlooked the ryder cup?
this is now becoming the most watched sporting spectacle on the planet and the most envied event to all those who cant compete, and the fairest qualifying system ensuring the right players play.
the FIFA World cup is the world biggest sporting event on several measures.
The 2006 World Cup Final was the single biggest global TV audience of all time, superceding the previous record held by the 2002 World Cup final. (although some estimates suggest the record is actually the late Pope's funeral). It is estimated by the International Broadcasting Centre that a cummulative audience of 32 billion people in 190 countries watched the 2006 World Cup. A truly stunning figure which averages roughly 500million viewers per game.
Over 3.3 million people also watched the 2006 World Cup Live.
197 countries entered the 2006 World cup and the advertising revenue, sponsorship and TV rights of the FIFA World Cup exceed the Olympics overall globally and in most countries individually.
The FIFA World Cup is undoubtedly the largest sporting event in the world when measured on these commercial factors. In fact when measured this way the Summer Olympics are second and the UEFA European Championship of Soccer is third.
However, the Summer Olympics is also HUGE. Especially in prestige. 202 countries entered the 2004 Summer Olympics (up from 199 in 2000), slightly beating the 197 that entered the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The 2004 Olympic games had 28 sports, and 11,000 athletes and 5,500 officials.
So, without meaning to sound wishy washy it really depends how you measure "biggest". Commercially it is the FIFA World Cup but in terms of abstract ideas like spirit, participation and kudos it is probably the Summer Olympics (the Winter Olympics are very small on global terms). I'm afraid the SuperBowl (although massive in the USA) and especially the Ryder Cup don't come close to these two on any measure.
Hope this helps.
The super bowl! LMAO. more people watch worm races.
A lot of people don't care a lick about soccer, but total's close to two billion - roughly one-third of the world's population watch.
soccer is played worldwide. From impoverished villages on the subcontinent and in our most sophisticated cities, the game is pursued by young and old alike regardless of their cultural background or ethnicity.
others say how often do we watch track and field or gymnastics other than every four years?
201 countries participated in the 2004 Olympiad, to what 32 teams in the 2006 World Cup
My opinion
the Olympics is great. It brings the world together. Its a matter of nationalistic pride. To hear the anthem is special. The stories around every hard fought medal/comebacks/photo finshes are treasures to behold.
It's estimated that four billion people worldwide will watch the Beijing Olympics on television
