Who's the best sportsperson of all time and why?

Anyone from any sport counts. The answer with the best justified reason will get the 10 points.

Answers:
Ugh. Lots of short-sighted, boring football answers. Beckham. Pah.

For attainment I think it's going to be very hard indeed to beat Steve Redgrave. 5 Golds in 5 Olympics. In a REALLY tough, endurance sport. That's going to be tough to beat in modern olympics (I'm not counting pre-war when PE teachers used to be drummed up to jaunt over to the games to take part in the 200m and fencing).

The only truly comparable feat is Birgit Fischer's 8 Golds in 6 games in canoeing. But, let's face it, you wanted someone famouse, right?
michael jordan - why look all over the world and you will see WHY
i'm goin for Paulo di Canio - he was an awesome player in his day, but he was a proper sportsman too.
remember when the ball was crossed in for him in front of an open goal but he caught it instead of scoring because one of the opposing team was injured.?

Class.
I think David Beckham.
Michael Jordan, there will never be another player with his skills,& he gives back to the community.
muhammed ali without question not only was he a genius and entertainer but he uses his fame to help charities now even though he has parkinsons disease himself.
Pele. This man was a genius on the pitch and was just as inspirational off the pitch. still to this very day he epitomises the true meaning of sportsmanship. The only other person who comes close was Muhammad Ali.
The best sportsperson ever- the Brazilian footballer Pele!!
The reasons why are:-
1281 goals in 1363 matches - all-time world record
Top Brazilian goalscorer of all-time
IOC Athlete of the Century 1999

International Honors

1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden: winner
1959 Copa America: finalist
1959 Top goalscorer in Copa America (9 goals)
1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile: winner
1966 FIFA World Cup in England: first round
1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico: winner

92 caps, 97 goals

Yes he only played his club football in Brazil, which wasn't the best league for football by far. But it is still extremely impressive!!
i'd have to go w/ Muhammed Ali. He fought the best like Frazier, Foreman, Archie Moore, Norton, Holmes, and Liston.
He was a multiple time champ in differents decades and eras. He won an Olympic Gold Medal and threw it in a river because of racism. He boxing style was just masterful, fun to watch, the best boxer ever at fighting while backing up. He was'nt just some stupid jock, he was a well spoken creative guy. And when he was on top of the world as champ they tried to put him in the army, but he refused because he stood up for what he believed in.
i might sound like a bit of a noobish sk8r but im really not but.tony hawk because of that 900(ut to all sk8rs my fav sk8r is actually louie jones or jake duncombe or jake brown)
Muhammed Ali has inspired countless people not only in sports but in every walk of life. He transcended the sport and become the only logical choice as best sportsperson! He fought 2 no-win scenarios when he beat Liston for the title and Foreman to regain it. He was given no chance against "the Bear" and was touted as "the louisville lip" and even less chance against Foreman who had destroyed Norton and Frasier - who had both beaten Ali previously. Nobody believed in himself more than Ali. Just to coin a phrase, you play soccer, play tennis but you don't play boxing!
