Is it true that Atlanta won the right to stage the 1996 Olympics because they bribed the officials who voted?
Corruption is widespread in sport
Answers:
Entirely possible but it wasn't just limited to the Atlanta Organizing Committee. Before the Salt Lake expose, it was the norm for IOC members to get lavish gifts and demand favours in exchange for votes.
So it wasn't just them who were offering, the other candidate cities were as well. But perhaps Atlanta offered the largest. It was thought when the candidates were first chosen, that Athens would get the Centenary Games.
Moreover, the USA just hosted the Games 12 years earlier in 1984. When Athens got the 2004 Games at the expense of favourites Rome, it was also a similar case.
Thankfully, this method is now history. London would have never beaten Paris for 2012, if this were so.
It's entirely possible.. but I doubt it.
