Why do refs wear shorter shorts then footballers?

I've never noticed, but possibly that footballers wear longer shorts to avoid any 'spilling out', whereas referees try to stay on their feet and don't need to wear suck long shorts, who knows
Their legs look so much better!

I don't think they have a say in how short or long there shorts are. In the case of a team, yes the players have a say in that

Refs tend to be at least 20 years older than the players they are officiating, which tends to leave their sense of style 20 years older as well.

I think it's because they don't have the balls to make the difficult decisions like booking a player for feigning injury, diving/simulation, and trying to get their fellow professionals booked or sent off.
they do not, they just have more padding in them in case of player abuse so they look shorter
